Inner Tie Rod Tool
Hello my fellow Max heads.
In a few days, I will be attempting a inner tie rod replacement. I have the correct part coming in the mail and already read over the write-up.

I have a question regarding the specific tool that is required to complete this task. The write-up specifies "Lisle inner tie rod tool #45750".
Here's a few pics

Does the tool have to be this exact one? Are there other brands I could use? Is this tool even necessary? I see a few inner tie rod tools on ebay, but am not sure if it would apply for my case. I am wondering if a inner tie rod tool is the same for all front wheel drive vehicles. The tool specified in the write-up is between $50-80 and not available at my local auto parts stores. I can only find them on line. For a tool I will probably only use once, it seems like a waste. Any suggestions?

I replaced some tie rods last year, and I had to use a tool similiar to that long tube in your picture. It had to go through the tie-rod, bolt down on it, and then turn to remove it. I don't remember anything other than that tool being special. removing the retaining clip is a PITA, not sure if their is supposed to be a special tool for that or not, but I destroyed both of them taking them off.
Yes - thats the best tool for the job. The Autozone rental tool does NOT work on our tie-rods. You can buy this tool from PepBoys for 50 bucks (steep for a one-time job)... but there is no other easy way to break the tie-rod loose.
