PCV Valve?

What does it do and how often should it be changed? Is it easy to change?

Change as needed. I do it every 30k because its so cheap and easy preventative maintenance.

Do you use an OEM or aftermarket PCV valve? I have 60,400 miles now and have never changed the PCV valve. I have no hesitation whatsoever, which is a common symptom of requiring PCV valve replacement.

I can get an aftermarket PCV valve from a parts store for Cdn$4.00 plus tax, or pay Nissan Cdn$17.99 plus tax. I am inclined to go with the aftermarket PCV valve.

Edit - I just checked the $4 PCV valve is made by Fram. I avoid their oil filters like the plague, but would a PCV valve made by them be acceptable?

I have always used Nissan PCV valves - I get them for 8 bucks or so (USD) from one of the many online nissan parts houses. If I had a spare one sitting around I would have gladly sent it to you for my cost.

I have installed an aftermarket one in a friends maxima and found that it didn't fit nearly as well as the original part.

In your case, why not just pull the valve out, shake it, if you hear a rattle, then you are all set, just put the valve back in. You could also just spray a bunch of carb cleaner into the valve, or soak it in carb cleaner to help clean out any deposts/build up and make sure the pintle is free.

Thanks. I should also disconnect the hose and put my finger over the end of the valve and test for suction, should I not.

The only reason I am thinking about changing the PCV valve is that I have to go through emissions testing before the end of the month.

Yes - you can follow the Haynes procedure to make sure the PCV system as a whole is working correctly. I had all that apart when I did the valve cover gasket job recently, so I made sure the vacuum tubes, and PCV tubes were clear and that the valve was operating correctly.
