High pitched whistle?

Since i got my 97, ive noticed epecially when the radios off, that i get a high pitched whistling noise at partial throttle between 2500 and 3000 rpm. It seems like its doing it at a certain throttle position when im lightly accelerating. Anyone else experienced this?

do you have an intake? I kinna have a faint one in the low RPM with my flipped box

I wouldn't worry about it, besides why pay thousands just for that turbo sound!!?!

Heh. Its more like a really high pitched constant beep almost at a certain point. No I do not have any form of intake modifications. Ive had this noise with the OEM/OEM look alike red filter which was on the car when i bought it. I just bought a NAPA gold filter and i still get that noise.

air leak in the intake? check all your hose clamps etc

does it get more pronounced as you accelerate? my 95 subaru had a similiar noise..turns out some of the bolts on the heat paneling along the exhaust had snapped from rust and the sheilds would rattle and pronounce a whistle when I accelerated..

do you have an aftermarket stereo? If so the wires going to the amp could be picking up noise if they are too close together.

I get that same whistle, sort of a turbine sound. It's at every rpm though.

I get whistling at almost every rpm w/ the VI and CAI, loud too, but I also get this distinct weird noise at around 2500-3000rpm, it sounds like RRREEEEEEEEEEEeEEEEEEEE then right after 3K it dies off... lol eh..

I was gonna say the same thing, but one can usually tell the difference between the stereo doing this or some other component. I've had both happen to me. The stereo doing this is easy to pick up because it is more of a panoramic sound. The intake doing this is easily pinpointed to the front/engine bay area.

Could be. One day I woke up and got ready to drive to work only to find that the Supercharger faries had installed a brand new vrtch on my car. The whining was my first clue, followed by the lag, I mean increase in power.

Er why would my radar detector whistle??? Even before i had one, I had that noise. s0ber describes the noise most accurately. I wish I did have a S/C though

Everything on my car is stock...at least for now. As i stated earlier, its only in that RPM range and my intake is stock. Im pretty sure i dont have any air leaks.

it could be the ground for your stereo ( if aftermarket or removed and replaced)
an exaust leak or gasket but i doubt its coming from the intake anywhere!

my reason for saying this is i have seen many car intakes leak or clamps not be tight enough and no sound or (whistle) from it

bump.. i too have a whistling sound, but im pretty sure it's my custom intake.. i hear it when accelerating (also around 2000-3000 rpm's and then after that it goes transformer style into a V8).

if you claim that everything is stock then i'd go with "Me[kk]A"'s post.. could be some sort of leak in exhaust.

I think its just our cars, mine does something like that, it sounds like a high pitched vibration. I swear it has something to do with the factory y, mine does it in neutral though, so I might have a different thing. Does it go away when you've been driving alot? engine warmed up?

I think i know exactly what your talking about aussie! I've heard this whistling forever, but never posted cuz i didnt think many people have heard it....

Let me describe what i've experienced: Its very faint, but audible, a constant whistle similar to the sports whistles you hear during a football game. (yet not nearly as loud). Your windows have to be up and radio off. (Not for it to make the sound, but for you to hear it, duh) The sound it only present at partial throttle, as you said. Let off the gas and coast, or accelerate at half thorttle, the whistling goes away. (Or perhaps the frequency gets so high at half throttle, its inaudible to the human ear)

I've only experience the sound while cruising 65-80mph at partial throttle. Not during acceleration, or coasting at idle. As soon as i give it a tiny bit of gas again, it whistles. And i hear it coming from the engine-bay near the middle-passenger side.

It doesnt seem to bother me, seems kinda normal and cool, i've just been curious as to what it could be! The only thing i can logically come up with (sorry if this is silly) is that at partial thottle, the air is coming through at a certain velocity into intake via vacume or othewise, as it's passing through the manifold and splits into each plenum/manifold cylinder chamber; It causes the whistling. Similar to when you blow along the top of an empty coke bottle. anyway thats just my 2cents. peace fellas

OMG Someone knows what im talking about!! I knew i wasnt going crazy!

I was thinking the same thing. Something due to the velocity and amount of air coming in might be causing something to resonate... but i wasnt sure what. Thats why i posted this.

Yeah i hope not, but it just sounds kinda wierd when your're driving with the stereo off and u wanna just listen to the vq :P and u hear that wierd whistling noise. It just gets a little annoying sometimes so i thought i might be able to get rid of it.
