gauge cluster lights

Has anyone ever went to change a bulb in the gauge cluster and noticed that Nissan put these little plastic(maybe rubber) covers on the end of the bulb? What is that cover there for? I just changed my bulbs and didn't put the covers back on...I'm not gonna melt my gauge cluster am I?

I've noticed the covers on other cars too (my wife's for example). The covers might help diffuse the light, i.e. help avoid hot-spots in the lighting.

yeah, I think they definately do do that, but I was wondering if maybe they also help keep the plastic back there from possibly melting over time...I'm not sure how hot those bulbs get.

I can't imagine that the bulbs get too hot - o/wise those rubber/plastic covers themselves may melt...

the condom is the change the color of the light, if u put them back without the cover the light looks yellowish and ugly, i noticed with the condom on it it looks whiter.

hmmm, yeah, I guess that makes sense, because the "condom" is blue, so it'll filter out all the yellowness...I replaced my bulbs with red ones, so I never saw the gauges with normal, condom-less lights. The red looks great though!
