What causes high idle?

Hey, My car just went nuts today, idled at 3k after a trip on the highway. I burned my clutch a bit just trying to get home. WHat could make the idle that high? Vacuum leak possibly? Faulty tps? Please, i need to know so I can fix it, i can't have a car with a 3k idle.

Thanks,
-Freddy

It could be a number of things, including a faulty TPS, stuck throttle cable, maybe a sever vacuum leak... I don't think it's your IACV (just in case you were wondering).

that happened on my dad's cadillac a while back, turned out to be the TPS. Do you have a SES light on b/c of the high idle?

Had the same problem a few months back and cleaning the IACV was exactly what fixed it. Of course resetting the TPS in the process too.
