266k miles and OH NO......PLEASE HELP!!!
I recently ran over something on the road (not sure what it was) and I heard a large boom. The next thing I noticed, my check oil light was coming on. I probably drove for another 10 minutes like this until I could get home. When I looked under the car I saw that there was oil everywhere. Whatever I ran over mangled the splash guards underneath my car and punctured a hole in my oil filter. By the time I got the car home it cut off on me down the street from my house. The next day I went to change the oil filter and added more oil. When I went to start the car it made a loud pinging noise for a couple of seconds then quieted down. Well now the car is making a slight pinging-knocking noise and even though it is not that bad, its driving me crazy. Yesterday I went to an oil change place and had high mileage oil added along with some kind of oil stabilizer (Lucas). They claimed that the heavy oil along with the stabilizer could possibly make the pinging noise go away. The noise has decreased a little but is still there. What else can I do? Should I wait it out and see what happens? I have taken care of this engine over the years faithfully and would hate for a freak thing like this to have ruined my maxima.

All I know is that running an engine without oil is BAD...........
If it still works, One sould suppose that heavy oil and a lifetime of light driving might help it back on its feet...
....Or, start saving for that 3.5 swap you've always wanted.

Driving with the oil light on after you hit something is really bad. Especially if you drive it until the car stops. You're lucky the motor didn't seize up completely.
Is the car smoking or doing anything else abnormal except for the noise?

maybe the thing that you hit somehow got stuck somewhere in your engine bay?..and is your oil constantly going down as you drive?..like check the oil before you start a trip and after you get to the destination..and see if its at the same level...lemme know what happenes..maybe oil pan or something

sounds like you have damaged a rod bearing, due to no oil pressure. I would start looking for a replacement motor. This should be a expensive lesson. When the OIL light comes on ...... STOP the motor until the reason can be determined.

a lot of things can happen to an engine with no oil pressure, its probably certain that the ping is from some internal mechanical failure. i would also check the belt and the cam pulley in hopes that a nick in the belt or the pulley, or any of the pulleys for that matter, would be the problem.

Sorry to hear the bad news. The oil light is not a check oil (at your convenience) light. It means you have low oil pressure and are damaging your engine. When that light comes on, you have to shut your engine off ASAP or sooner.

where is the pinging coming from? lower portion of the engine, then like they said would definitely sound like a bearing. you can drop the caps and if your luckily have the crank polished out. if not, time to look for another motor as a sswap is usually cheaper than a rebuild
