Harmonic balancer repair

My 1997 SE is in the shop as my serpentine belt broke yesterday. The mechanic is telling me the belt broke as the Harmonic Balancer disinegrated.

I would expect the Harmonic Balancer (some call it the flywheel or crank) would be a lifetime item. Has anyone had a similar issue?

I did not see a recall or service bulletin on this item.

Harmonic balancer, flywheel and crank are three separate and distinct things.

I don't think the VQ has a balancer, it's only a pully with a timing ring on it.

Harmonic balancer is a misnomer. It is actually a torsional vibration damper. The VQ crank pulley (like almost all oem crank pullies) has a thin rubber ring between the two concentric steel rings that make up the pulley. The rubber ring absorbs vibration energy through hysteresis, resulting in dampening of vibration amplitude when traversing torsional natural frequencies.

Here are some pics of a VQ crank pulley that has come apart due to deterioration of the rubber ring.

Excellent info. Another reason not to buy an UDP.
