Parking Brake

So I noticed ALOT if not almost every person that I know and see driving never uses there parking break, even when parked on an incline/decline. WTF is wrong with them???

First question is for those of you that don't use it. [Begin rant] Why do you not use it??? I know we've all experienced that clunking/hard to shift feeling when trying to put an automatic into drive or reverse after you parked it and it rolled... do you people think thats good for the transmission? It just boggles my mind that people don't use it. [/end rant]

For those of you that do use it, were you taught to use it? or was it something that you did by yourself?

I was never really taught to use it but I always no matter if I drove a manual or automatic.

I learned on a stick so I have always had the habit. I continue to use it on my auto every time I park, incline or whatever. I have also got my wife into the habit of using it. I can imagine I may start getting lazy if I ever buy a car (read as minivan) where the parking/emergency brake is a food brake - just feels stupid operating a foot-operated parking brake.

I'm always using it even if I'm 5 spd 'cause I don't want my clutch or transmission to hold the car all the time in an improper way..brakes are there to stop the car and so I use them!

i use it every time i park, like clock work, it's second nature now. i don't even realize i do it anymore.. this is my 3rd 5spd car.. so i guess its just natural

oh and i just kinda did it by myself, after my brother told me to years ago and said 'do it if you want, (on flat) some people do it, some don't.. you don't want your car rolling into something'

Make sure you engage the parking brake before releasing the brake pedal. If the car moves even slightly once you've engaged the parking brake and release the pedal, then the brake isn't holding properly.

I ALWAYS use mine. I drive an auto but I don't want the extra wear that comes when the tranny has to hold the car in park. I got my Mom to use hers too but my Dad hasn't caught on yet. I get sooo mad when he drives my car then forgets to engage it. They taught me to do this when I was 16 in driving school so I've done it ever since. If you never use the ebrake the cable gets brittle and can break. I pull the ebrake while I'm still in drive, then I stick the transmission into park.

I never really used mine until I moved to PA. Now that I'm back in IL, I seem to use it out of force of habit. I even got my gf to start using it on her new Tibby.

Definately think using the parknig brake is the best deal, but only if it's done right. Alot of people put the car in park let it roll then put the parking brake on
