Finally buying my 4th gen
Finally buying my 4th gen
Hey wuts up guys, i finally found my car and im going to look at it tomrrow, 98 black five speed, all the options, 100k. Now i know alot of things start to go at around 100k, the clutch is probly pretty warn out. The struts are probly on there way out the door if they havent been replaced. But Performance wise the car should be alright. I am buying it from a used car lot and the owner said it was in great running conditinos. The only electric conponenets taht would go would be the O2 sensors, knock senors, MAF for the most part and they would make the check engine light turn on right? I just dont want to run into any hidden problems that wont give a CELL. BTW it has a clean car fax and its listed at 6500. the KBB for a dealer ship is around 7500 i belivev and the private party value is around 5800 so i think its a reasonable price, ill probly offer him 6 grand cash. Any imput on buying this car would help
offer him $5000 even cash. you can get it for $6000 easily.
all used car dealers tell you the car is in great shape. its a given. a check engine light can be anything but mainly reguarding emissions. car can be rich or lean. injectors can be clogged. ign coils can be bad. all the sensors. could mean the cat is bad. it can be huge or minor things.
every car is diffrent, not all parts wear out at the same time. Its better to be on the safe side and replace somethings and do a tune up.

Hello fellow Massachusetts Max owner! Welcome to the 4th Gen forums. Be sure to read all stickies for general info so you don't get flamed the first day. If you need any help detailing it, PM me, I detailed cars professionally for 10 years. Mechanical stuff I can't help you with, I have a friend who's a Nissan Master Tech, the only thing I touch under the hood is the washer fluid level.
Good luck with it and enjoy that 5 speed, they're far and few between. Once again, welcome to the 4th Generation Maxima.

Try and get a service history on the vehicle. When they aren't available it's a suggestion to me that the car might not have been looked after all that well, or the owner didn't care enough about the car to keep records.
^ he said he is getting from a used car lot. 99% of cars at used car lots dont have them. so yea. Just be ready in case something goes. I mean aleast he is kinda prepared. knowing the clutch and shock/springs can go bad. While you doing shock and springs, check out the brakes and cv axles since your there anyways.
KS are common to go on 4th gens. Sounds like a good find, see if you can talk him down some on the price
Bobo - if the day came for me to sell my Max, you can bet I'll provide a service history w/ everything done to the car from A to Z

Well good news guys. I just got back from test driving it and He showed me the car fax and it look good, the car was serviced alot by its previous owner but it doesnt not specifiy wat was done. He got the car from Costal Nissan in Hanover MA. He put on new front breaks and replaced the knock sensor! how sweet is that. The car has 102k so its probly the original clutch. The car is smooth and quick. Black on Black and every option.....even wood grain? i didnt think u could get wood grain on an SE but there is a lil nissan stamp in the bottem of the grain. It looks a little funky tho cuz it looks like a different shade of wood grain on 2 sections of the dash. The paint is nice , bummer has small scuffs, the drivers side rear view mirror has a chip knocked out of it and the passenger side window has trouble going up all the way, motor is fine just needs a lil silicone spray in there. Overall looks good. Its marked at 6500 and was originally 7500. I dont believe the price is negotiable but ill if he will do 6k in cash. Im bring my big bad brother with me tomrrow who is a mechanic to take a look at it and see if he can talk down the price..........btw.......I went to new england dragway last night...... the 15th fastest ranked Audi in the world was there (according to Biturbo.org) raced and ran a 12.5 ...... he had an s4 with the best audi chip money can buy professionally tuned, dumped (virtually no exhaust), RS4 turbos, and an performance fuel pump and injectors.......the best part of all.... It was a bright yellow S4 wagon with 130k on it
There is no such thing as not negotiable on a used car lot. Make this guy think you have distilled your choice down between this car and another fictitious car. Then do the famous head for the door routine...aka I have to think about it ...yadayada.. then he will do the rope a dope on you and thenstick to your guns. Don't go in too high on the offer and play good cop, bad cop with your brother. Remember this guy wants his commission and he doesn't get it unless he sells the car!
I bought my 97 SE with 102k miles and the original clutch was still grabbing strong. Now I'm at 115k and the only reason I need a clutch now is because the OEM one can't hold the extra power I'm making.
Sounds like a good deal though! That car should be worth right around 6000-6500.

Yup, I sold Nissan for 6 years and while you are there, ( like stated above ), If he won't come down in price, look at your brother with all seriousness and say: " Well, okay, why don't we go look at that 99 with 110k, it's a year newer for the same money. " Maybe step away a few steps but so the salesman can hear you. Tricks of the trade.
Good luck man. Post pics dammit!! We are creatures of visuals, we love pics!!!!
