clearing an undefined code

I have a 0214 code (undefined), after I do pull the codes the next code I get is the 0505 (all clear). What gives?

The code comes on after about 15-20 miles of driving after its cleared.

The only thing I can think of is

A. I checked my plugs (and have since made sure the coilpacks are secure)
B. Was going to clean my IACV but ended up putting it back on for later.

It doesn't really affect anything but I just don't want it to keep it from passing an emission test (CEL/SES light = instant fail IIRC)

Thanks for any help that you all can give.

Okay dude, my CEL light came on this past Saturday night. I pulled 2 codes, both undefined. So I just reset the ECU and nothing yet. Meaning no light has come back on. Something may have tripped it, who knows. Just reset it and keep an eye on it. Good luck. The littlest thing can trip those damn lights.

Yeah I have had one other undefined before that just went away.

My problem this time is that it comes back in the exact same way.
SES light on>pull codes>0214>0505>reset>20 miles later comes on

the last time i got funky codes was when my camshaft position sensor went beserk. I used a obd2 code scanner (I assume you're turning the screw on the ecu?)

go to an advanced auto parts, they will pull codes and print up the problem code. Try that and see what the print out says.

Will this be vastly different? As in they will have the DEFINITION?

it might or might not, its worth a try, hopefully they'll have a definition for it. If a advanced is close by its worth a shot.

I was just in there for my oil and filter too . .

Next time I have her there I'll have them pull it and make a printout.

Well, tonight I pulled the code 0214, got 0505, then cleared the codes.

Disconnected the battery, took the IACV off, took it apart, put it back together, put it back on with sensors secure and screws snug, started the car, no code, drove for about 40 miles (hwy 1-2am) no code (i was tripping it at 20 before) so for whatever reason I think this issue may be resolved. Thanks for your replies.

0214 is not undefined. It corresponds to P1444 which is the EVAP Canister Purge Volume Control Valve.

I didn't get it in the code generator or the Haynes . . Thanks though!

It's off for now so we will see how it goes.

i've had the 0505 ghost code for a while :-/.. worst case scenerio pull up to emissions with a screw driver in hand and twist the ECU screw to clear the ECU (check stickies) i believe it's a few turns front, few turns back, few turns front, few turns back.. release.

this should clear all codes at least for a few minutes. If that doesn't work disconnect battery for a few minutes and then reconnect it (this is all in the case that you don't get it solved and you want to pass emissions as you stated)

- good luck.

0505 is the code for when no problems are detected.

Depending on what is wrong, resetting the ecu before an e-test may not help. If the code shows up as pending on the scanner, you will probably still fail.
