are these really needed when you drop the AT pan? i know the FSM says they are, but $3 each (x 21 bolts) just seems like a ripoff, and it doesn't look like there are aftermarket options. ayone have leaks when reusing the old bolts?

I'm planning on just reusing mine this weekend. We'll see how it goes.

You can probably buy thread sealer off the shelf and just clean & re-treat your old bolts.

When i replaced my clutch I rounded off one of the bolts that holds the flywheel to the crankshft. It only cost me $22 to replace from the dealer.

I reused the bolts with Permatex thread sealer. No leak after 20,000 miles. From my experience: 1/ Use small amount of thread sealer, one drop is plenty. 2/ Don't over torque those bolts. I bought two new bolts in case I stripped some, but never needed them.

as for the torque spec - the FSM says 7-9 NM or 61-78 inch-lbs. what the h*ll is an inch-pound? it is just a matter of /12 to get ft-lbs?

I once had to pay $6.22 for a nut for the y-pipe. That is why I avoid my local dealer for parts when ever possible.

Yes. So torque to 5-6 ft-lbs. If that is at the extreme lower end of your torque wrench's range and it is the clicker type, then be very careful. Sometimes the clicker wrenches won't click when you set them at their lower extreme, and then you end up twisting the bolt head off. Don't ask how I know. It's best to use a small torque wrench for the small bolts, and a large one for the larger bolts.

I dropped my pan to clean out the tranny, only put a new gasket in, never changed the bolts or used any type of sealing material on them. That was 3 years ago, no leaks since.
