97 Max, RIP advice

Hi all,

I was actually curious to see if I could gather some advice regarding my car. A week ago my head gasket blew (>$1G fix). It was strange since I regularly change my oil and perform routine maintenance. Anyhow, I am deciding whether to part out my car or seek other ways of getting a bit of money back from my long trusted ride (173K) being that I will be buying something else soon.

Thank in advance for your info.

How many miles on engine? i'd sell it $1,000 or so less than if you were to sell it if nothing was wrong.

well if you were to sell it, you probably wouldnt get that much money for it since the miles are high .... is it leather?, the leather would sell fast.... everybody wants black pieces for their max....you could proly make a good amount of $ parting it out ...

If you are tired of the car you will want to get rid of it, but if you get a new car or a newer used car, you will be paying over $1000 anyway. I would just fix it/do an engine swap and call it a day. How did you find out it was the head gasket? Did it overheat, you'll have to check into all that for repairs, you may also want to shop around and find a better price at a reputable mechanic.

Thanks for the advice guys. I've decided to move on. KBB listed it private party for ~$3K, so I subtracted $1K for whatever the engine problems may be (I'm an idiot if it's an easy fix), and another $1K for the dent in the driver door and hood. I would try to part it out but I am out of town for work M-F typically. I listed the link if you are curious. Thanks again.

Since the I purchased the car from the previous owner that did not replace the fogs when he broke them for whatever reason. I actually purchased the entire fog light kit with mounting brackets, harness, and switch (not sure what the term is, the replacement switch that comes off the steering column with the headlight, cruise, turn signal and fog controls). Since this was purchased in 2002 I am going to snap some pics and place it on eBay. I will post in the FS section when I do. Hopefully by tomorrow or tonight.

I was thinking the same thing.
$1000 for a head gasket is too high, ~$700 sounds right.

I don't think so. I even knocked it down to $800 to make it quick sell. I got 3 calls but just glad the hastle is over. I told the guy 1000 was cheap but I guess he was even cheaper. I bought a 2003 A4 1.8T quattro w/ sports pkg. & 5 spd. (something different) so I was just wanting to get it over with.

Thanks. I wanted a G35 coupe (stick with Nissan) but I thought I would try something different this time plus the handling is great in the A4.

Wow that sold quickly.

DE-K swap would have been my suggestion.
