I don't know what's up with my car, but I seem to be getting about 10-13 mpg. I've also noticed that the guage seems to jump up from 2000-3000 rpm's. HELP!

x1000I checked the stickies, couldn't find anything dealing with my issue. Can you direct me to the one that could help me? I'm going to see about my knock sensor. I wish I posted this earlier. I could have done it yesterday when I was off.

lol you're not supposed to guess, 10-13 yeah right O_O_OOriginally Posted by GREENlight
That's city miles by the way
fill up your tank, drive around till its on E, fill the tank up again...
divide the mileage you got on that full tank of gas by how much it took to fill it up...
example, 320/15.2 = 21mpg

Can anyone ever ask a question on here without people jumping all over them. If you don't have the answer to my question then move on. Only respond if you have something meaningful to say.

Well the first thing you say is that you seem to get 10 -13 mpg. Come on now, you either get that mileage or not! What does "seem" have to do with it?
You provide absolutely no information on the car or what you have done to it, if anything?
Eg. Mileage when you bought it, current mileage, what you have done to it in the interim. does the vehicle have a maintenance history?
How can fellow .orgers help you if you don't provide any meaningful information to enable them to give you a hand?
I suspect the vehicle has been poorly maintained for several years and it's going to cost you a lost of money to fix it, particulary if you don't know how or are not willing to do a fair amount of the work yourself. Does that make you feel better?

MILES per gallon = miles / gallon
Miles over gallons ...
Miles divided over gallons. ...
360miles.. set from last FILL UP(data available in dash trip set odometer) / 16.5 gallons put in since last FILL UP (data available on gas pump read-out)

whoa, way too many ***gots with a stick up their *** in this thread
do you have the CEL light on in your dash? has the air filter been changed recently?

I checked the CEL light. It's saying I need a knock sensor and O2 sensor. I don't know mutch about the history of the car. I got it in the early summer and haven't done much with it.
The valididty of this thread is not warranted by his 'theory' of 10-13 mpg, so unless a true factual number is produced, this therad must cease to commence.
you may also want to check the o2 and what is the plugs and wires like. all of those factor in MPG
If your O2 sensors are bad your car is going to run rich all the time. The O2 sensor may be setting off the knock sensor code, but it too can cause poor gas milage. Replace the bad O2 sensor first, then check to see if you still have a knock sensor code. If you do, then replace the knock sensor. In the middle of all of this, buy a cheap calculator at the dollar store, keep it in your car, then you can post factual milage to help determine the cause of your problems.

don't forget the tire pressure as well, an over or underinflated tire(s) can also affect your gas mileage

I reset my Trip "A" odometer everytime I get gas. I also check my mileage everytime I get gas. I know that might seems like overkill but I have done it since the day I got my Max. I currently have 174,xxx on the clock. The best mileage I have ever gotten is 26mpg and the worst is 21mpg. A lot depends on whether I'm driving highway or city or a combo of both. Also important is how long I sit and idle with the A/C on. Idiling kills mileage! Tire pressure, air filter, tune up, fuel filter, O2 sensors, etc are all important if you want good mileage.
Maintain your Max and she will deliver many, many miles of trouble free service...and get decent mileage to boot!!

you sure you're not driving an SUV to get that kind of mpg?Originally Posted by GREENlight

hey greenlight, change your 02 sensor. Mine was faulty. the CEL (check engine light) would go away after a while, but then fellow orgers told me that if it threw a code, that means its still not working properly n that i should change it n i would get a lot better mileage. Indeed i did get better milage. Stupid me forgot to reset the ecu, so it took a lil bit of time on its own for me to notice the change in gas mileage. Knock sensor is another thing, make sure that iti s good since the knock sensor is the main issue to gas problems and are known to go bad on our cars. If you are not mechanically capable of doing this yourself, bring it to a local shop. Knock sensor can cost you up to $500 with install and the 02 shouldn't be more than $150. But if you do the 02 sensor yourself, its about $65 for the part, n i believe, if i'm wrong please correct me, the knock sensor you can get one for like $175?? but lemme tell you that the knock sensor is a lil bit harder to get to, Make sure that when you DO change the o2 sensor, you are changing the right one, i believe the 95 has 3 02 sensors also? 2 in the precat n one in the cat?? the code you got will tell you which one, if not, post the code nd i'm sure the fellow orgers willl tell you which one to change. 02 sensors can be ordered thorugh oxygensensors.com don't get the universal one, get the one with the bung that allows you to plug right in your car and not have to splice the wires yourself

I saw this but $68 looks a little shady.

I also changed new 2 x O2 sensors and knock sensors on my 97 SE but I noticed that the mileage got WORSE, from 20mpg in city to now about 17mpg....i don't know what went wrong.
Do I need to reset ECU for these changes?

Yes, you do have to reset the ECU. If you had done that after replacing the 02 sensors the KS code may well have gone away. Perhaps you didn't need a new knock sensor.
Also when was the last time the spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, PCV valve and oil changed?
What tire pressure do you run?
Have you ever used a fuel system cleaner, eg. Chevron Techron, BG44K, Gumout Regane, LubeControl FP60?

Make sure to check(and replace if you have to) plugs, plug wires, distrubutor cap, fuel filter, and fuel pump.

I finaly finished up my gas. I'm getting 14.4 mpg. My car has been indicating that I need a rear O2 sensor and a knock sensor. I purchased both of them online on Sunday. Hopefully I'll be able to install them this weekend. I hope this works.Originally Posted by NmexMAX
I wonder if the original poster even has bad gas mileage .
I got worse than that when i had an exhaust leak at both y-pipe/exhaust manifold junctions.

Anyone have anything less than that?
