speedometer problem
speedometer problem
I have a 96 maxima and i will be driving down the road and the speedometer quits working. If i press on the face of the gauge cluster it will start wprking. anybody had this problem? what would be loosing in the dash? also i have a check engine light and the code is for the speed sensor.
Pull out the gauge cluster and re-tighten all the screws in the back of the cluster. Sounds too simple, but sometimes this fix works. I never had the symptom of my speedo not working, but I did have a CEL with multiple codes including a speed sensor code for years, and re-tightening made all the problems go away. It may not fix your problems, but this doesn't cost you anything and it's worth a shot at least before replacing a speedometer or speed sensor.

Yep, like hasei said take that dash apart and make sure everything is tight. I had a similar problem, my speedometer and odometer stopped working while my tranny was having problems and I went about 8k without it showing on the odometer. I took the dash apart, but couldn't fix the problem. As soon as I had my tranny replaced, it worked fine.
I acually got stopped by an unmarked IL state trooper in a mustang doing 110 and he ask me why I was going that fast. I almost said because my speedometer wasn't working, but I just said, "No reason. I deserve a ticket." He ended up letting me go with a warning.

Better hope that speed sensor isn't for the one behind the gauge because if it is it gonna cost you about 200-300 to fix it and you will have to replace the whole gauge cluster
hmmm make sure the plugs that go into the guage cluster are working, it could just be a loose wire....but you guys should look at it the bright way. If the speed sensor isnt giving a signal to your speedometer it sure as hell isnt giving one to your odometer....= D

If there is something wrong with his speedometer, why would he buy a whole new cluster when he can just buy the speedo head mechanism in the cluster?

this is an old pic I have from a while back when I was helping someone install theirs. While standing on the drivers side of the car, lean over the fender and look down at the tranny (you need to take out the intake to do this) and you will see this on the top rear part of the transmission.

But yea, my friend's maxima had a speedo problem and tightening the screws worked. good luck
i had the speedometer problem before, i took the cluster out and tightened all of the screw on the back and now it works perect. it actually is more accurate now as well. it drops very rarely, but its no biggie. although, if u put a new speedometer in the car, how does the odometer thing work? i never had to fool with that suff, but how willu know what miles u have

I guess the cluster must be bad.
