struts on trunk lid? instead of bars?

struts on trunk lid? instead of bars?
anyone ever try to put some kind of struts/shocks on the trunk lid? to replace the torsion bars holding it up? i was looking for a way to eliminate these bars in order to build an eclosure under the rear deck for some 6.5" subs that would be mounted in the stock speaker locations.
