how to tell if mileage is accurate
how to tell if mileage is accurate
Hey guys I jus got my max last month. The car has a NY salvage title, I wouldnt of bought it but the car is amazing, you would never know it was in an accident if you werent told. But what I really want to know is if my mileage is accurate its a 98 se with the digital odo. It currently reads 57862. The car has a decent amount of scratches and little rust on the hood. Was the just an abused car? Or does it have alot more miles on it then I think it does? The dealer put it in writing that the mileage is accurate, so im pretty confident but I find my self wondering when im driving it. THe car was hit in the front, but as far as i can see the subframe is original and it doesnt look like a bad accident. Thanks.
Perhaps you should have explored this before buying the car... now what's the point? You could try do a carfax or autocheck (or whatever it's called) and see if the numbers match up. You can't tell mileage based on scratches and rust.
No the car is really quiet. It rides really nice to, the inside is also queit. It always starts even in the cold mornings after sitting for a few days. You can barley feel it wen it idles at a light, so I guess its accurate lol.
from my understanding the mileage is stored in the cluster. There are signs that you can look for in the manual odometers, but none that I know of in the digital, unless you can get ahold of a carfax or other report with differing mileage.

The way I look at it is just like statistics. If the numbers are repeatable there's a chance they're reliable. For example, to say an 8 yr. old car has 58k is very unrealistic. 7k per year? On the other hand, if you had something showing an inspection every 12 mos., and the mileage increased by roughly 7k per year, it may be true. The fact that it's a salvage makes the mileage moot. Why drive yourself crazy, just drive it and forget it!
My car has 61,338 original miles on it and I've owned it since day 1 (October 1, 1994). We don't have carfax in British Columbia, but if I get on the Aircare website (emissions) and plug in the registration number on the insurance (provincial government run) or VIN #, the mileage at the time of inspection going back something like 10 years pops up.
Check the emisssions testing data in your state and it might shed some light on the mileage history.

I would worry more about buying a Salvage car more then the mileage.
If only the body was built like the VQ motor you'll have nothing to worry about.
Goodluck.. hope your car doesn't fall apart on you.

Salvage means junk the insurance co. didn't even want to deal with, and they're shysters who will squeeze pennies out of stones. The only way to turn a profit on a salvage vehicle is obviously to put your own shop's labor into the job, and cut corners on the parts. If it were profitable, there'd be no such thing as a totaled vehicle. The insurance co. would have their own connections to repair the vehicles and put them back up for sale.
