New Brakes Screech in Reverse

I recently got Raybestos Quiet Stop ceramic front brakes installed from Pep Boys. I bedded them properly as per the Stoptech article. However, since it started getting cold, they make a horrible screeching noise when I use them in reverse. They're fine otherwise. Does anyone know a solution for this or cause, as I plan to go to Pepboys soon to have it remedied and don't want a run around. I mean, the brakes are called "Quiet Stop" after all!

Thanks

i've had the same problem with new oem pads, could be theres brake dust they never cleaned up from the rotors thats now rubbing with the pad. Just an assumption of mine, so I could be wrong, but hey its a place to start...

A lot of brakes do exhibit this "squealing in reverse" symptom. Mine do this intermittently (in reverse, in the cold). It's likely a combination of things.

1. Your parking brake cable/grease probably gets thicker and less viscous in the colder weather causing the pads to drag ever so slightly (since the cable may not release completely).
2. The caliper pins bind slightly - from that grease solidifying with the cooler temps.
3. You could have a bad caliper, but since you say it started with the colder weather, it's likely 1. or 2.

Just to make sure the brakes aren't binding, jack up the rear wheels and make sure you can turn them by hand (with the parking brake released). As long as the wheels turn freely, you're fine (most likely).

Our rear pads have dimples on them, make sure the dimples are lined up with the lil wholes on ur caliper.

Well, i had this same problem, and when i spun them while jacked, it had a bit of resistance, like the pads were still pressing on the rotors... would that be because of the grease solidifying?

There will definitely be some resistance, i.e you should hear the pads rubbing the rotor when you turn the wheel, but you shouldn't have to exert too much force to make the wheel turn.

I'd like to know how far you actually drive in reverse that the squeal is an issue? Usually a cleaning and lubbing of the pins, guide plates and the use of anti squeal on the areas where the pad contacts the caliper will stop most squeals.

well with me, it only happens when im leaving for school, around 7:20 AM, usually ~45 degrees, only noticable when the pads are cold, i.e. backing out of the garage. Any other time during the drive i go into reverse i dont hear it.

when i got my car the dealer had just put cheap pads on without replacing or turning the rotars after a week or so every time i touched the brakes it sounded like a bus coming to a stop. new rotars and pads fixed that problem

Check the TSB's. There are updated brake pad retainers that help keep pads away from dragging on rotors. Mine used to Moan like crazy

YMMV

Most likely just cheap pads and rotors. I put them on my girlfriends max and they squelled like a school bus. Replaced them with raybestos and they are quiet as can be!

In reality, who cares? How often are you going to drive everywhere in reverse? As long as they are quiet driving forward, you are golden, my man. The reverse noise will eventually diminish.

i havent read all your posts here but we just bought a new honda and same was happening... the brakes were put on wrong.

i suggest checking everything to make sure there is no damage or warpage and put them on correctly.

Had the exact problem when i replaced my fronts with Quietstops. Here's what I did - installed those spring metal "spreader" springs on the fronts - they don't come with the stock brakes, so don't try the Stealership, but go to Pep boys and get the brake hardware kit and install the springs and anything else that looks worn out. Also, make sure every contact area on the brake pad (except for the actual pad surface) is coated in brake grease per the installation instructions. Lastly, blast out the brake dust from the inner brake shield - you'll be amazed how much dust accumulates there between washes.
