Oil Pump

hey when the oil pump goes bad (loss of pressure) can it be salvaged/repaired or do I have to change it? If I have to change it where can I buy it new (can't put in a used one or can you), Nissan Parts?

What makes you think your oil pump is failing?

What symptoms (problems) did the car have that made you take it to a mechanic in the first place? Did the oil pressure warning light start to come on?

If thats all that happened, you don't need an oil pump, you need a new oil pressure sensor. It's a common failure item in our cars. Costs about $20 bucks.

Don't get ripped off, oil pumps on our cars don't usually fail, actually it's very uncommon on this board.

no, the engine was making weird sounds around the timing chain area so I took it to the mechanic thinking it was a timing chain problem, he told me it was actually the oil pump that had lost pressure and needed to be replaced (eh?) so will the new one come presurized, and if it is installed what will assure me that it would lose pressure too?

Its a switch, its on the oil pan, you'd need the oil pressure switch tool (what ever its called) to get it off with ease, and put a new one on.

Were the sounds like a "rattle" - if yes, its more likely a timing chain tensioner issue.

Exactly, the oil pump doesn't just fail on our cars. The noise your hearing is the timing chain slapping around because the tensioner is failing. It's a very common issue with 95's.

Your mechanic is incorrect with his diagnoses of the problem and after he replaces the oil pump your still going to have the same problem!!

Don't get ripped off, don't replace the oil pump, have him put a new timing chain tensioner in the car.
