Throttle Noise

I've noticed I hear a bit of a scraping noise any time I move the throttle. It's not really audible from the engine bay if the engine is off, and it's quiet enough that I have to have my music off to hear it from in the car when it's running.

I just recently cleaned my TB, but it did it before that, so that can't be it. It just sounds like the throttle cable is scaping against something but I can't figure out what

I would take a look at the TB while you have the intake off while someone steps on the acc pedal with the car off, see if you can hear the area it's coming from. Check the cable for any possible signs of rubbing, as well as any other moving part that moves with the acc pedal. Thats where I would start, but if you've done that with no luck, then I'm not the guy to help you.

Ok, ressurecting this thread again to bring up some new grievances. I can now hear the noise from outside the car, as when I had the windows open it was a louder noise. Somebody suggested something with my stereo, so I turned it off and the sound was still there, so that isn't it.

It's only when I give it partial throttle, though. No throttle = no noise. 3/4 throttle to WOT no noise. It's just everything inbetween closed and 3/4 throttle that makes noise. Even constant throttle, where I don't change how much I'm touching the accelerator pedal at all. I'm so stumped as to what it is...

So there is sound even at constant throttle? Do you have to be moving? or does this happen even while at a standstill (neutral).

Hmm. I don't think I've tried to rev it in neutral to see if it makes the noise. But yes, it does happen even at constant throttle. Let me go check!

Just tried revving it and keeping constant throttle in neutral. This is with the engine cold, where the noise is typically even louder. It didn't make the noise

Is something up with my tranny then maybe?

Well the fact that it doesn't happen in neutral suggests that it may be tranny related... have you checked the transmission fluid level recently?

Try drive in 1, 2, with OD off, etc. to see if you can narrow the problem down further.

Haha, funny you should mention that. I was just checking the troubleshooting guide in my Haynes manual and saw that listed. I'll take a look tommorrow when I get up, it's too late and I don't feel like going back out in the cold again.

Alright, I'll try that tommorrow morning, too.

Ok, finally checked it this evening. The fluid level is right where it should be.

...and OD off, 1, and 2 are all the same as in drive w/ OD on or reverse. It's all the same. Like I said, no noise in neutral or park.

Now I'm kinda worried

5-speed swap?

Got your PM - hmm.. I'm not sure what to think at this point... are you sure it's not something stupid like a rubbing brake dust shield... not sure why it would be RPM dependent though... can you get a sound clip?

I doubt it's something like a brake dust shield, I put it in neutral while I was coasting and throttled it a little and it gave no noise. Not sure how to get you a sound clip, I don't have a camera with sound

...and even if it were a brake dust shield, it's not really "RPM dependent" it's throttle position dependent. Coasting in gear it doesn't make any noise. I'm thinking it's dependent on there being a load on the tranny, if it is indeed a tranny issue. Perhaps the reason I don't hear it beyond 3/4 throttle is that the engine drowns it out

So let me get this straight... you're doing 50mph, you let go of the pedal, the noise goes away... you press the pedal again and the noise starts again?

Sometimes bad axles will only make noises under load...(i.e. when you aren't coasting).

I had a similar thing happen, only it sounds more like a light whistling noise?

My guess is that they are the originals, I have no way of knowing.

I wouldn't describe it as a "whistling" noise, plus mine is for more than just 500 RPM's of the range.
