The AC on Maximas isn't cold to begin with, even when the system is properly charged. If you are comparing it to the frigid R12 systems of the past, then don't bother getting your AC tested, since R134a doesn't get as cold as R12 for some reason.
If your Maxima is blowing out warm air, then I would get the AC recharged, but otherwise, the semicold air is unfortunately normal. It's been 100+ all week where I live and the AC in my Maxima can't keep up with the heat.

I live in San Jose area. The past few days were abnormally hot.
I compared A/C between my 96 max and my 00 RX300. RX300's A/C is definately colder. However, if I leave Max's A/C on long enough at its maximum, then I have to either wear a little more, or turn the A/C vents to other direction instead of to myself, maybe leave one vent to me.
Last week when my 30K major service was done, I asked the dealer service advisor about the A/C. He said they already tested it and it is up to the spec.

I used to think that R134 wasn't as cold as R12 either, until I got a '96 Taurus. Man, that thing was COLD. I could almost never leave it in AC with blower on high.
You guys must be in California? I'm in the SF Bay Area and it was hot the last couple a days. My AC didn't even feel like it was working. But it was several degrees cooler than the 99 degree outside temp.
I can leave my AC on all day and it won't get cold. It works better when the engine RPM's are between 2800 and 3300 rpm or so. At idle, it almost the same as the outside temperature.
If anybody does find a way to make it colder, be sure to let me know!!!

I also live in the Bay Area and had to use my AC the past couple of days. I ocassionaly drive to my parents in Bakersfield. Now, that place will easily peak 105-110. Two weeks ago, I was driving back to the Bay Area from Bakersfield and had my AC on for almost 3 hours driving on I-5. It took about an hour for the AC to get really cold as I was listening to Game 2 of the Lakers and Spurs series on the radio. I'm going to have my AC serviced this weekend and will post results from this service.

That's weird. I think the air in my car is great. It does take just a minute to get cold, but then again I have a black car with black leather and black windows. But I have no complaints about my A/C. It's much better than the air in my last car, a 93 SHO. That air was cold, but it didn't blow it out worth a damn! I swear, Max A/C in that thing blew it out as fast as spped 2 in manual mode. (ACC)

AC
My 99 Max AC works ok and I live in Hawaii. It take a little while to get cool, maybe 2-3 minutes. It's definately not as cold as my mom's 94 Camry. I think the AC's on the Nissans are inferior to that of Toyota, just my opinion.

maxima's AC isn't up to par...
I also live in the Bay Area. There were a few hot days just recently, and I've had to turn the AC on at least once a day.
My friend has a 97 Camry, and I've been in his car with the A/C on. I've actually tried to compare the feeling of his vents to mine. His is definately colder.
And yes, I agree, when the Maxima is moving, the air does get significantly colder. But by the time I get a comfortable cabin temperature, I'm already home. Would anything like Redline's Water Wetter work?
Can't we do anything to increase the Maxima's cold air output?

R12 freon contains ozone harming CFC. That is the reason it's no longer used ir automotive a/c systems. If you have a car that used that originally you can still buy it, but the cost is much higher than R143a.

hmm I'm seeing more & more bay area ppl - cool! im in Sacramento (not many of us here on the forum). Anyways, I've been having the same problem with my 99. It takes a while for the cool air to blow out and when it does, it's usually pretty damn cold by the time I get home - a 45 min. drive. then again we are having 100+ degree days here

I think Toyotas have better AC than Nissans in general. My mom has a 99 Camry XLE V6 and it has great AC. In fact, the fan on that car is super strong. I think on "3" (out of 4) in the Camry, it is stronger than 4 on my Maxima. Might be the distance from the vents as well, since I sit pretty far back in my car.
Someone posted use recirculate. They key to get colder AC in the Maxima is to first have the windows wide open, blast the AC on full for a few minutes to flush all the hot air out, then shut the windows and switch to recirculate and the AC will feel colder.
Yeah the California heat wave has been killer. Last week it was 106 in Sacramento and man, my AC was on full blast and I was still sweating.
