starter question

well...my starter is squealing...which means it needs to be greased...

anywho...the question...does this mean i need the lithium grease for it?(the guy from that one website said he only used it cause its all he had) or will regular multi-purpose grease work?

Multipurpose will be fine - just make sure it can handle both very low and high temps - so that it doesn't solidify in cooler weather and liquefy under the heat of the running engine.

I got mine for 180 or so online - check Pinnacle, Courtesy, Nissanparts.cc, etc.

I'm all for the lower cost and lifetime warranty, but the inconvenience of being left stranded and/or needed a tow because the starter keeps crapping out (in addition to having to keep replacing it), is well worth the extra 50 bucks up-front (at least to me).

I agree, but my starters lasted quite a while and gave warning signs when the greese was getting a little dry. Plus being a 5 speed, I can get the car started even with a dead starter, but an auto is a different story.

Sometimes starters fail w/out warning - i.e. just dead one day... with a family to cart around, I try to minimize such chances (i.e. fuel pumps, starters, alternators). However, your point on a 5-spd is a valid one.

That may be ok - but definitely is not as heat-tolerant as some other greases that are available.

I dont know about ebay starters. . . I'd stay away, if your going to go a non oem route, might as well be from a local auto store where you'll have a lifetime warantee.

If the ebay is built with great quality that would be a different story but you wont know till you get the starter.

1. Just go buy some high-temp grease.. it will cost a few bucks:
e.g.

2. I agree with MDeezy, either get OEM or a local auto-store with lifetime warranty. Ebay makes no sense in this case.

It'll do that ... but it's on its way out, why not just grease it and not have to worry about it making awful noises?

Cheap ... quiet fix.
