run it down on purpose with a tank in your trunk if you really want to find out. otherwise, just don't run it that low.

lol This is fun game.
How far can we go!! I've played that one before. And won!!
17.95 Gallons to fill it back up. I can only wonder how much i had left...
Usually if I fill up when the Light first starts flashing on it takes 15-15.5 gallons to fill it.
18.5 gallon tank (though I question that last .5 gallons)
Also the fuel gauge will actually go a bit below the empty line when it's really empty (just like it sits above the full line when full)
How many gallons do you usually have to put in to fill it up?

Yeah, I think the bulb in mine is burnt out. I removed it some time again, so I know I don't have a light. I'm too lazy to tear my dash apart again for that.

Most I've ever filled up was 17.3 gallons.

Does anyone know if there is anything else besides the bulb that won't make it turn on? I've changed the bulbs around that I know works and it still doesn't come on. I drove the car around for quite awhile after the empty line and I filled up 18 gallons.

i'm happy i found this this thread cause i've been wondering about that light. i tried that stunt with the bottle of gas in my trunk, but i punked out and stopped at a gas station. i tried it another time without the bottle of gas in my trunk and the needle went so far down it looked like it was almost past the E-line. what the heck is up with this light.

Hmmm dunno but what i do is... Everytime i fill up i reset the miles for a full tank. Usually my Gas light will go on when i have 300 miles on it that is in city driving. When i hit 300 miles it is a little below the empty line. When it goes on it usually has about 3 - 2 gallons left in the car. Anyways. Try that and see if you notice the light turn on. Its fun by the way. I was the same way before i got my car i didnt wanna be stranded cause everything is far from my house. TRUST YOUR CAR It should turn on and if it turns on during the day u can see it but just a little enough to see it.

If you had gas in your trunk, what's the point of stopping at a gas station?

The light should come on just as the needle touches the line before E, you still should have about a gallon and a half in there, which should be good for about another 20-30 miles.

The floater that is in the tank which is responsible for triggering the light could be malfunctioning and not causing the light to come on.

why do you guys insist on running that low? you can never be too rich or too full of gas... in your car's tank.

i'm gonna try this again with the gas bottle i my trunk, but this time i will just go for a drive down some country road (not many of those in houston). i mean its not like i really let my tank go low but i just need the assurance that my light works even if i will never really need it. i guess drivning one oof the most reliable cars on the market makes u be like that.

Yeah I've been about 20-25 miles when below the E-line. The most I've ever filled up was 17.6. Those were the days of 3.50 a gal for gas. lol

well i have pushed it to the limit, and the light never came on, and my car died and i had to walk 1/2 a mile to get a 20 dollar gas tank (*****es) and get some gas, so what else can make the light defect?

The gas light has a mind of its own. One day im driving, light is on the whole time, im not worried because it usually goes off with 2 gal's left in my tank. The next day, it didnt come on at all. Went to fill up and did 17.5. So with estimates, the gas light tends to go on when it detects ~2 gallons left, on a flat surface.

My light turns on when my gauge is just below the E line. I've been pretty far under the E before but never ran out.

when I'm at E, my low fuel light in my Max will slowly fade on and off. don't know why it'll be a steady on. Even my Jeep when it reaches below 1/8 tank has a low fuel light that stays on steady.

I don't trust that light any more. One day I was running late for work and didn't have time to stop for gas... no big deal because the light wasn't on. Driving up a hill and all of a sudden the car starts studdering from fuel starvation. The light still didn't come on. I barely got up the hill and to gas station....

Stupid light.

Just don't sit too long on a slope. My last 4th gen and my dad's 3rd gen both sat for too long tilted back 5-10 degrees and the car wouldn't start until it was leveled & cranked for at least a minute. I'm assuming the gas ran back to the tank, and the fuel in the tank did not reach the pick-up.

lol. mine came on in my driveway after the needle has been down past the last line. I dont remember how many gallons I put into it though.
You can try driving around until the tank is almost empty and then pulling into a gas station and just idling there if you're really curious if the light works...

I just tried the fuel game today on accident though. I didn't even know that light existed. The light slowly comes on and goes off depending if I slosh the gas around. The Owners manual says that we (1995 SE) have 18 gallons in our tank. My question is, does anybody know exactly how much gas you have left when the light goes on? I know you guys are saying about two, but does anybody really know?
