Need a new ECU - looking for some info

Bear with me, this is a little long.

A year and a half ago, I was having some CEL problems, mostly oxygen sensor related. The shop I went to replaced the ECU with a junkyard one and the O2 sensor in question and the problems went away.

Last week I took the max in for my state inspection at the dealership. It failed emissions due to the CEL not coming on with the key in the ignition but the engine off. They scanned the codes, I'm not getting any codes. However, it can't pass unless the CEL comes on with the engine off. They checked the bulb, the bulb is fine. They then checked the ECU and informed me that the previous shop had installed the wrong ECU - not only that, but there is also something wrong with the ECU and it needs to be replaced.

I talked to another mechanic I know, he agreed that the ECU needs to be replaced.

Here is where I need a bit of help - finding out what ECU to buy. Nissan is telling me I need to buy it from them at a cost of $855 (not a chance in hell). I have a local junkyard I talked to, they'll sell me one cheap (<$100) but they claim that they need to know the exact part number of the ECU because there were many variations. I can't give them this number since I don't have my original ECU.

I did some searching around on here, and from what I've found, I can use any 1996 Fed spec auto ECU.

If someone could clarify what I need, I would greatly appreciate it. If I just need any 96 fed spec auto ECU, I'll go to car-part.com, but if someone could give me the exact part number I'll buy it locally and save a few more dollars. Thanks.

Check the sticker on the ECU and reference it off of www.car-part.com and Jim Wolfs website

BTW, I used a different serial # or w/e it is when my JWT was getting reprogrammed and it was fine.

As I've said, I don't have the original ECU, so I can't check the sticker.

That's good to know about the different serial number working though.

If I am not mistaken, you can use any ECU between 1995 and 1997, Automatic or Manual.

auto's cant use 5spd ECU's, the ECU's also control the TCM.

The only way your auto ecu can use a 5spd ecu is if it was converted to 5spd
