hey guys, on our 96 i30 when accelerating the tach goes down from the idle 700-800 not up... but the engine is reving up.... you can hear it, these are the three codes i pulled

p0150(o2 sensor)
p0325(knock sensor)
p0130(??? in the stickie there are 2 diagnoses, o2 sensor or closed loop control??)

what could the problem be? kinda scared my sister, boggled my mind...

It won't make the tachometer go down while accelerating.

Dont tilt your head upside down when you are pressing the accelerator.

Could be a tach gage problem? Rev it and see if it revs healthy

Right. That's really weird.

An intake won't solve your problem if that's what you're trying to say...

Anyway, replace your appropriate sensors because you will want to regardless, and look into the "closed loop control" diagnosis.

In the meantime, BUMP for a guy who needs some help.

Well sounds like an instrumentation error, if the engine doesnt sound like its decelerating, then it obviously isnt... if all else fails... stealer?

How's it ride? Does it shift correctly? Does it happen when it changes gears too or just in nuetral or first gear? Was the check engine light on when you pulled the codes or was it ghost?

when it shifts the rpms go back up to abour 1k rpm, and than go down again.. drives fine... any safety issues i should be worried about? or does it seem like its just a guage problem?

so the rpm never really goes up to where it should be but the car seems fine? anything else not working in the gauge? maybe it's just the tach part that has some kind of faulty connection or something.... then it shouldn't be a big problem.

Does this happen when it downshifts? At any other time the needle seems to be working but it's really about 1k lower than where it should be? If that is the case, then we have the same problem (95 max auto). In my case it's the tachometer that's bad and I have to change the cluster. I've had it like that for almost a year now and no problems (no codes either). It does work sometimes though, but only when it feels like it.

Mine also pins itself to 0 whenever I accelerate. The rest of the time it sort of wavers between 1 and 2k rpm. Oddly enough at idle it seems accurate.

Ahh shoot, didn't notice the dates when I was searching. Well I have the problem described in my post above. In the five years since this post has anyone else had this problem?

Car rides great otherwise. It is an automatic so its not really important that I have the tach working but I like to see my RPM.

Hey guys,
I have kind of the same problem with the rpms.
they rev fine when im driving but then when i come to a stop it goes down to 0 and stays there. after I start to drive again, it still stays in 0 and after like 10 second it goes back to normal. by the way it just started doing it today when i was going home from work. Any advice?

Fixing this problem will be too great a pain.

Taking out the gauge if that is indeed the problem often causes breaking something if you are not an expert.

I recomend living with this.

maybe the ground connection needs to be cleaned? not sure where it would be on a maxima (new to the nissan scene). make sure your battery terminals are clean as well.
