also i was trying to disprove the stereotype that ALL nissan dealerships are filled with people trying to screw customers over.

in the minds of people who are less educated about cars, it is their only option to go to the stealership.

I thought it was my broken clifford remote starter acting up but just to be sure I had my car towed to Dam Dell Nissan at Syracuse New York. I had to get professional help because I have no automobile knowledge and I have no tools or a garage. Next day the dealership said, as it turned out, my starter was broken. Since my car was right on time for a oil change, I asked them to replace the starter and change oil for me for the total of $380 bucks. After they started to work on my car for about half of an hour, the guy came over to me and told me that my alternator is toasted because it has been running without bearing and making the squeaking sound. They had me gone over to my car and hearing that sound, which honestly I didn't know existed because my knowledge of how cars run and how they should sound like is equivalent to that of a Beatle driving blonde. So after some brief hackling, I was settled with $700 bucks for replacing both the alternator and starter and get the oil changed. Now that really sucks because I can't do any of those myself and I don't know any trust worthy smaller shops that can do those cheaper in the area I live.

Anyway, my question is does nissan's quality sucks that bad that I really have to get my mechanical knowledge boosted? How much would it normally cost you cost to fix if both your starter and alternator is toasted?
So basically all these words amounted to a rant about how you feel you got ripped off?

I agree, Autozone, VIP, NAPA, Pep Boys, all the chain auto parts stores suck for things like starters. A friend of mine has a 95 Camry and the starter went. She went to VIP and bought one with a lifetime warranty. It lasted 6 months went back got another and just last week after 8 months it went again!! She's like, " It's got a lifetime warranty, they're free! " Yeah, is VIP paying you for your labor changing the fckin thing 3 times? NO!! Toyota wanted $300. as opposed to $189. The original starter lasted 10 years and 150k. Point being, I have always used OEM parts fom Nissan, you definitely pay twice as much, but last twice as long. No chain auto parts junk in my Max baby...

I have changed my own starter (forget about fixing... only changing) and it is simple enough.

When done carefully it saves you money AND the hassle of having somebody who really doesn't care end up messing up some other part or leaving something else disconnected.

hey guys,

I just got my car back from the dealer. it turned out that its wasn't my alternator's bearing that was worn out, it was my AC compressor. So after spending $650 bucks (yes, they charged me less because the part is now cheaper), getting a new starter, AC compressor, and engine oil, I'm actually happy...because my car now runs almost silent! Like an electric car! My car always had a humming sound that I thought was normal operating noise but now its totally gone. I knew Maximas run very quiet but I didn't know it was this quiet until this day!

The hardest things are actually having to deal with TIGHT A@@ nuts/bolts and not having TOOLS. Also having to endure the back breaking leans suck. I currently have a REMAN BOSCH starter changed a few days ago, boy that thing sounds nice at times, and at other times WHIRS a tad. I hope it holds. My beck/arnley hashed in less than 1 year. I want to go OEM, but I don't have the cash to.

Everyone learns and everyone picks up different things with time from all different walks of life. Give this guy a freaking break man. Stop acting like you never got ripped before or you know every damn thing about every damn field. A car is a car, and the automotive world is the automotive world. If you know about it great, if not, then please take time to learn and know the basics.

Life is an endless journey of learning things anyhow. People turn to the board for help, so please extend that out. No matter how you dice it though, you will be inept?? at something, and you will also be green at it as well. At the same time think about how you were green at once.

My honda starter is 15 years old and has 80k, while my nissan's oem starter crapped at about 50k-60k. Things have its ups and down.

I think so. Prior to owing a maxima the only thing I knew about cars mechanically was how to change the oil and radiator fluid. With the ownership of the max I've learned a lot about cars because this thing is such a POS its not even funny. Now this might just be my case but majority of my issues usually always appear on the front page of 4th gen section (ie knock sensors, o2 sensors, suspension, rough starting, EVAP crap, etc) so they are common problems. My haynes manual is the most read book that I own since I'm aware of mechanics' way of screwing people.

What do you expect from an 8 year old car?? At that age, any car you look at will have deteriorating parts that need replacing. That's no surprise. At least you are aware of what goes on in your car and you have the capability to fix it. Doesn't mean that your car is crap. I have replaced many wear and tear parts in my car but that comes with owning an old car. You want something that doesn't break down for the next 4-5 years? Get a new car but eventually that new car will go down the same path as your old maxima. And during that 4-5 years you'll be throwing away 400-500 dollars a month on a nice car but by the time you pay it off, what will you end up with? Another old car with problems.
