Oh, almost forgot, you'll need to change the knock sensor too.

^ LOL.
Read the procedure for changing the fuel filter, where you release the fuel line pressure. Reads remarkably similar to what happens when the tank is empty.
Just refill and quit being stupid and trying to run on empty. If you're that poor, you probably don't need to get to where you're going.

if some crud from the depths of the tank managed to make it past the filter, your injectors could get clogged. good rule of thumb = fill up at the 1/4 line.

The only thing you can damage running out of gas is the fuel pump. The fuel pump uses gas as a coolant for the pump motor. If you keep running the pump with out fuel it will fail. As for the picking up stuff on the bottom of the tank... think about this... the fuel pump pick up is about 1/8 inch off the bottom of the tank. If there is anything down there it would not matter the fuel level. There is also a filter attached to the pick up to prevent large debis from entering and destroying the pump. If you have water and lighter than fuel crap floating on the surface of the fuel that could be an issue when running out or extreamly low on fuel.

I was actually going to work to get more money when this happened and the gas station is accross the street from work. I pulled over right when it started studdering. My dad's friend brought a galloon of gas and went to work with that. But the car was running fine. I'm planning on selling it in April or June for a 350Z anyway.

Why would parents want to give a kid such a poor handling car? Parents that care give their kids nice cars if they love them. Wish I had $10 for every kid who drove a M3 or 545 to prep school around here. Moral is if you wanna show-off, you'll never win. There'll always be someone with that six-figure set of wheels across the street or kitty-corner.

I loved this thread. Kid cant buy gas for his hoop-D maxima and he's buying a Z.
Running your car out of gas will cause no damage. You'll just be an idiot. There is a screen before your fuel pump and another filter from the fuel pump to the fuel rail. The screen in the tank wont let any crud in. Most gas tanks have some crud in them. And whether you run your car full or empty could result in this potentially getting past the first screen and into the fuel filter.
Good luck with the Geo Metro. 3 cylinders of American-Korean muscle.

For me, maybe every other month or so, depending on gas prices, or if I get a bad tank of gas, I'll let my fuel go down to E to burn it all off, then refuel the tank w/ fresh fuel
