Question about IACV

Question about IACV
I have two questions actually.
I asked this first question in a post a few weeks ago but no one ever answered...
anyway
1. when I get under the hood I can hear the IACV clicking (I assume the solenoid is clicking on and off). It's a very regular clicking every second. click-click-click... Is this normal? I am not entirely shure how the IACV regulates Idle air other than opening and closing a little valve to let air in or not.
2. Today out of bordom I took off my IACV and opened it up and cleaned it (though it wasn;t that dirty). I took the solenoid valve off of the housing and exposed the little plunger. I tried to push it in. It was very hard to push in. Is this normal?
I also didn't know which pins to test by applying voltage to to see if the solenoid was working (haynes manuel just tells you to test for resistance but I wanna actually see the plunger move!)

interesting... some do some don't... how bout the black plunger on my pic. ever try to push that in by hand? or better yet, anyone know which two pins on the connector to energize to test the solenoid?

Mine clicks all the time, and in fact sounds like a set of drums (weird, but true. Imagine a bass drum and snare - bump bump tist, bump bump tist). I've actually tried to replace my IACV with a used one from a member, and IIRC, both of the solenoids did not go in very easily. hopefully this gets more reads.

I talked to a tech at my job and he told me that it's nothing to worry about, but he works on BMW's all day so his opinion only counts for so much. I haven't experienced any problems, but the ticking drives me crazy....

thats cool. After reading the FSM it seems that the IACV is actually controlled by a 4 position stepper motor and not a solenoid. I guess I should have known that... that would explain why it's hard to push the plunger in
I stopped worrying about it. I have bigger problems
