solar battery charger?

solar battery charger?
anyone know if one of those solar battery chargers will work on a maxima??? they plug into the cig. lighter to charge battery, but i'm doubting maxima's have the electrical hookup to the battery to do this.
thanks

This will work as well has on any other car, if it works on any other car at all..
If it charges throught the cig lighter, how do you figure that a maxima does not have a hookup to the battery? How do you think the lighter is powered? From wind turbines located under the hood. Thats why the lighter only works on windy days and at high speed.

^lol.... well yea i was just about to say that VW have them. VW have them on their cars but i don't think it will work for our max. Because VW's are wired up diffrently then us. For instant radio can be turned on w/o key in the ignition. I think you can plug it in. But power won't be going to it unless you have the car on. That also might blow your fuse for the cig lighter since it wasn't really design for that as well.
The solar panel cig charger was design for new vechile that sit on the lot to maintain some battery life. since no-one really touches them untill they are sold. Great idea VW came out with, but don't see how it will help out a maxima.

you should just put a bigger pully on your alternater's piston so that the ratio is better than 1:1 and you'd get a bigger charge to your battery! ... sorry don't mean to flame, but it was just too tempting. that does sound like a neat idea tho!

It's for VW's. Keep it out of your car, otherwise you will have a lot of problems. It will start burning oil, you will have electrical problems up the @ss, and your water pump will fail. Your car will be called cute. But your glove box will be refrigerated.

The solar chargers do work, but since our cigarrette lighter is disconnected from the battery when the key is off, the solar charger will not charger the battery

you are a dumass too
a bigger pulley will slow the alternator down

It would work okay in the back window if you have an extra battery in the back for audio or if your main battery was relocated there, but they are trickle type chargers, and take a while to charge up the battery.

charged the battery last nite and drove the car... woke up this morning, tried to start it. damn thing is dead again. i hate electrical ****. Yes the battery was reloc. to the trunk. anyone have any ideas as to what's up?

If I were you, I would disconnect the battery when the car is not in use.
Repeated discharging of an automotive battery will surely destroy it in short order.
Only deep-cycle batteries are meant to be fully discharged and recharged.
There are try something like this

battery draining out? must be a fauty alternator component. you should check the voltage regulator for the alternator first. if not, you should just simply replace the alternator. i had discharging problems before, and few days later, alternator fails. both brake light and batt light came up on the instrument cluster...

buy a new one from autozone, their charging capacity is higher than the stocks, also.
in addition, make sure you list your name and address info to their system to settle for that lifetime warranty stuff. that way, later if it goes kaput again, just take it off and swap it with autozone for free.

The solar charger won't work through the cigarette lighter on the max as the key has to be on for the lighter to be connected. But you could wire in another lighter socket that is on all the time or rewire the existing lighter to be a direct always on connection and it should work. The solar chargers work good for keeping a battery hot if the car is not driven frequently. Some security systems will drain even a good battery over time and is one reason VW provides them, but this could also cause trouble with use of the chargers because some security systems are activated by fluctations in battery voltage. ( light comes on =voltage fluctuation=alarm ) I'm not sure if that would be an issue with chargers on the Max. Not exactly the same thing , but we use a solar charger on a houseboat with great results

Check the battery voltage. it should be about 12.6 volts fully charged. If it's below 12 volts it's never a bad idea to slap it on the charger for a while before driving (this would be a tempory thing). That way if there is nothing wrong with your alternator you won't put it at risk. (still go get it tested at austozone)
