4th gens on coilovers step in...

I am going to be doing my passenger side axle tomarrow and since I am going to be in there I want to pull my passenger side front coilover.

I have been getting some knocks and things of that nature but with the cold weather it is really getting quite annoying (if not infuriating).

The sound seems as though it is coming from the passenger strut tower area so I am suspecting the mount.

I haven't had the fronts off the car so what area(s) do I need to be adjusting/replacing?

Strut bearing? Will this be the same as stock?

I am on D2 coilovers so I would thing D2/KSport owners may be able to chime in on this one.

Thanks for any help guys, let me know if you need more information.

Happy Thanksgiving

this is quite common problem for d2/ksport coilovers... Gotta love that pillow ball mounts..

1. Try re torquing the top hat nut...remove it completely and use a good tq wrench and aim for 40ft-lbs (according to ksports)

2. The two allan bolts at the bottom of the coilover...loosen both of these and re-tighten them real hard..

3. The two collers that lock the spring into place....make sure you tighten them down with all your might...then use a hammer to lock them even more..

I got 2 & 3 down for sure.

As far as the top hat nut, I just tried to even it up with the otherside (which is silent) as far as how many threads are showing . . .

just try re-torquing it...worth a shot...maybe add silicon spray?

Steven88- just checked the top hat . . .WAY under tq. That is where my knocking is comin from.

Torqued it up quite a bit and it cured 98% of it. I can get it just tight enough before it rotates the spring while on the ground. How can I tq. it a bit more?

clunking from the strut tower was what I was getting, removed the nut completely and bounced the car a bit and the noise was very easy to generate....

hmm...what are you using to tq it down? I mean if your using a nice long tq wrench...that should be enough...as for torquing it more, the only way is to try an electric impact wrench...cuz those things tighten real quick without moving the spring I think? dunno if u want to tighten them that much

I JUST, went in the garage/test drive and the top hat nut was the main prob. just need to get a LITTLE tighter

My collars are SOLID all the way around, I'm usually pretty good with queling these noises, I just didn't think of the top hat nut coming lose in a short amount of time.

It may be time for a Loctite of some kind??

Yeah, I agree. Even if I could just get the nut to STAY the position it is in now I would be satisfied. Clunking = gone.

Thanks for the help Steven88.

ic what your saying....well all I really know are 3 things to eliminate noise from coilovers...

1. tighten the top hat nut,
2. tighten the lower lock nuts for the lower mount (allan bolts in case for D2s)
3. tighten the preload spring perches real hard then whack them with a hammer

also another thing is to add grease on the rubber gaskets....those might help too....but it seems like your issue is a CLUNK...and i doubt adding grease will cure clunking...maybe squeaks it will

no problem...just letting others know...if you tried all 4 of those solutions and none of them cures the coilover noise...it might be something more serious...as in, internal wear of the coilover, other suspension components worn out..etc

I bought some rubber covers from Sears that go on the nose end of pliers. Grip the piston safely that way and it should give you more grip to tighten the top nut.
