Weird nosie at start-up

My 1998 Maxima SE has 120,00 miles on it. When the engine is cold and the outside temperature is below 35 degree “F”, when I start the car, as soon as the starter engages, I hear a loud “Shriek” sound for about 1 second then it goes away. The car starts with no problems. The sound is not heard on a warm engine start and it has only happened about 3 times in the last month out of about 12 times when the temperature is below 35 and I do a cold engine start. Is something on the starter going out? I am doing any more damage if I let it continue until something fails?

Thanks

'Starter' re-grease it. Or, if so inclined; replace it. I let mine go for quite some time before re-grease job.

starter is my # 1 choice, # 2 is the belt slipping on the crank pully.

Best to replace it now.. or wait to be stranded in a carpark @ 1am when it finally dies

carpark @ 1am when it finally dies
