home made eye lids?
home made eye lids?
hi guys, im plannin on making my friend a set of eye lids for christmas. Im thinkin of making it myself. think possible? I'm making it for my car too...
the steps im taking:
get some masking tape, sharpie/or pencil over the desired place for the eye lid, and trace where the edge is for the top edge of the headlight and corner lamp. then make desired curves for the bottom half of the masking tape. take the masking tape and put it on some kind of bendable but durable metal, trace it with a sharpie. after this is done, do it again ( for the other side ) and cut it with metal shears. after cut , i think im going to just buy some vinyl sticker and paste over it so i dont see some excess sharpie and i wont have to paint it. so, think it will work?
comments?

You shouldn't have to make the model twice, you can just turn it over for the other side (miror image). I also don't think you need to write on your headlight.
Try making some with some carboard or something. I would rather go through a few sheets of cb than actaully mark my headlight.
Some kind of vinyl or rubber will prob. be able to work for the final product. I'm not really sure the temp. that the headlight sees but the material and the adhesive would need to be able to stand both that and the elements.
Just take your time and figure it out. I am interested.

What kind of car is it that you are trying to do that for?

buying = like 40 bucks for a vinyl sticker. like 90 bucks for urethane stuff. its quite expensive. i'll get this project done in a day or two and take pictures and show you what it looks like. im thinkin maybe use some kind of posterboard for the eye lids. like plastic stuff... that would be good. \yeah not marking on the head lights itself... i meant on the masking tape use the sharpie and draw the outline... i'll post how progress goes.

I think eyelids are kind of pointless anyway, perhaps that's why I think buying them is equivalent to buying 60 packs of chewing gum.
There's no way is would cost more than 10-15 to make your own.
Please post up pics of the finished product, what color car do you have?

I would rather spend that money on something more useful. Eyelids = .5 hp gain if that.

I did kinda my own version for free. I got some black vinyl from a sign shop for free and put it on the headlight, when its done u just razor it to ur liking. Mine hardly comes down the front of the headlight, its more for that ugly gap between the hood and lights. Anyways, its held up fine and looks good. Cant beat free!
lol this isnt a selling thread... this is a post your opinion on home made eye lids... anyways the accord is a 92 so its super old and NO ONE makes eye lids for that car so i thought it'd be sweet to make it for the car. Chrome is the color of the eye lids, cuz his and my car are black with chrome trim... nice look i'm halfway done with the eye lids so far... went to wal mart bought some gloss finisher and chrome paint. went home took some masking tape sketched about what the eye lid would look like. ( of course putting it onto the headlight first ), and then cut it on some shower liner. ( dont ask me... i asked home depot ). its not that bad actually, its a little flimsy but it'll work well when put on the car. after i cut it out according to the masking tape outline, it did it twice ( just reverse one piece ) and then sanded it down so i could paint on it. then i chromed it and i am waiting for it to dry now. after it dries, however, i am going to put some glossy finish onto it, then let that dry and then put double sided tape on the back of it. probably will be until tommorow to show you the finished product of it! total cost : 1 ft x 5 ft shower liner was 6 bucks. large chrome paint can and glossy finish 10 bucks. total about 17 bucks!
if only you could fiberglass.( its not hard, just takes time) anyone see the white maxima that the dude made the grill flow into eyelids? all one piece. it was pretty nice and a different idea. go for it. and then again, ebay might have some cheap.
