rear window dropped!

so i was driving down the road and i heard a loud crash of glass. it was a two lane country road and i thought some kids threw a rock at my car. actually, my rear window just dropped all of a sudden and it wont go back up!

so i currently have paper holding it from falling ...but i need to fix it or get it fixed. depending on what the problem is , can i fix it myself? Is it cheap to get it professionally fixed in money and time? I cant be without a car for more than a day. Should i take it to the dealership or should i take it to an independent mechanic where i get engine maintence done?

wow, that's the first time i ever heard of something like that happening...did you hit a big bump or something?

You could definitely replace the glass yourself (junkyard), it shouldnt take more than 2 hours if it's your first time.

I would do it yourself, take door panel off, check for loose or broken parts. You can use the opposite side for a refrence if needed, just take off that door panel if needed. Door panels come off by taking out a couple screws and pull up. Not hard just time consuming.

well the shop said that its a broken window regulator and the part costs $250. looks like this is going to be a pretty expensive job including labor. the window isnt broken, its still all in one piece.

My right rear window dropped on my 96 GLE a coupl of years ago. The culprit was a little white plastic piece that is connected to the cable which moves the mechanism up and down. There's a little metal "nut" on the cable that must be secured inside the plastic piece. I used some epoxy to secure the nut in the broken plastic piece and I haven't had any trouble fo two years. Good luck!

get a regulator from a junkyard or just order online. i can take off a door pane in record time of 4 minutes. and once you do it to one car, you can basically do it to any car. some might be a lil different but not much. defiantely fix it yourself. i don't think that a regulator should cost that much

I have had the same problem on my 96 ... One of my rear windows dropped a while ago. I tried to figure out what had happened, the white plastic piece had broken, exact same thing PatAtty experienced. I didn't know how to fix it ... So I just took the lazy way out and proped it up with a stick. It's been like that for a while and it hasn't bothered me much, til the other rear window dropped on the way home. Now I was fed up with this window situation and knew it was going to cost a pretty penny. So, I just repeated the same procedure with the stick and held it up. Every now and then the sticks fall ... and I am getting annoyed with fixing it at random times. I would like to just fix the problem(s) once and for all. I am pretty damn proficient at taking off the door panels now, what I don't understand is how to replace the regulators.... Any idea how?

Thanks In Advance

I have one left rear and two right rear regulators available for sale if anyone is interested. They are used but oem. I bought an ebay one about a year ago and had to return it because it was junk. The motot was loud and was made of cheap metal and would twist when you rlled the window up or down causing it to tilt.

I know people could break in... that is why I would like to fix it the right way. The windows are propped all the way up to the top, so both the windows are in the closed posistion, so no water is able to seep in. Also, both my motors work on the doors too, I wonder if it would be possible to just fix the little white piece instead of buying a whole new regulator...

Trust me, if people want to break in, they're going to do it. Two weeks ago someone broke into my car, they just smashed the left rear window. There was glass everywhere. Haha I would have rather them just slide the window down to take my stuff than have to have my window replaced for $180 (installed with tax).

Seriously though if you can buy yourself some time by temporarily securing it up, I'd fix it myself. When my window was broken I had to get it done ASAP so I paid to have it done.

I followed the procedure in the link here to fix my in 1 hours with part from a junk yard for $15.00. It's for 3rd gen max but should be the same procedure.

Well I decided to go for it and attempt to fix one of the doors, so I took off the door panel, then removed the regulator from the door. After examining the regulator and how it worked, I took the piece that broke off and used some plastic epoxy to keep it in place (what was nissan thinking ... they should have used all metal!). Everything worked out ... i put it back on and everything ... power it up.... and it only goes up, not down! At that point it was getting to dark and cold. Well I was still happy with myself that it actually worked, I am going to fix it completely soon. Also on another note... what kind of grease or lubrication would I use to grease up the rail that the window moves up and down on? I would like to do this on each of my windows, because it seems like they are getting slower and slower to roll up and down as of late. Thanks In Advance!

I'd use white lithium grease.
