How much to fix the Max? I wrecked it....

Actually, my younger brother did (12 yrs old, very mature). We were in an empty parking lot with no people. Being the cool big brother that I am, I suggested he hop over and take it in idle thru the lot. Three times he casually questioned my sincerety, but I assured it him it was ok.

ONE obstacle in the whole parking lot, and it was a fire hydrant with 4 cement posts guarding it. It was only 15 feet behind the car, and he had to start in reverse. I showed him the brake, gas, and steering, I shifted it to reverse for him. The rule was "NO GAS!!". He must've thought I said no steering either, becasue he took it in idle to within 8 feet of the pole without trying to steer.

I said "Steer, either way, just steer." He delayed, and I got a little panicked, and said "Brakes!" He hit the GAS! We probably hit at 10-15 mph@ full throttle.

Here's the pix. The cement pole was hit by the center of the back bumper, but it did little damage. The problem was that we knocked that over and the hydrant didn't give.

How much to get it fixed? I'm not looking for a perfect 10 paint job....an 8 will do

Needless to say, he was VERY upset with himself...and offered his 10 bucks allowance per week to help. I declined, and he went to my mother's and went to sleep. My fiance and I went home and I lsitened to her complain. I'm REALLY mad at myself, but at least it was liekly a good lesson for my brother. I'll talk to him about peer pressure and safe driving....no d&d either of course.

Sounds more like a good lesson to yourself. How mature can a twelve year old be when his big brother obviously needs a lesson in responsibility? Sorry to sound like a jerk, just my $.02 or less.

don't hate fellas, my lil sis is 13 and i taught her to drive when she was 12 almost 13, you guys would be supprised to see how well she drives, i knows it not right but she drives almost every where we go, she handles the freeway like she's on 'too fast too furious'
he probably had to do a lil more teaching before he let his lil bro move the car,
its cool being a big bro, when u get your car fixed you need to teach him and let him at it again so he wont have that fear of driving growing inside him.

He's your brother things like this will happen. He's your blood and thats important. It was a mistake we all get pissed off but in the end hes still your brother therefore your wife to be has to understand that.. we all make mistakes the damage isnt bad, in fact new rear bumper and have someone pull out the dent. it might run you 500-900 in the end but nothing like having the whole front end of your car toasted.

A new rear bumper, and a rear quarter panel. I dont think it would cost more than a $1000 after labor and all, or just your deductable on insurance. Does your trunk still shut ok?

my brother did the same for me when i was younger, just next time make sure theres nothing around for miles, lol. and it could of been worse, did you here about the father who taught his son how to drive in the parking lot and he hit the gas instead of the brake and ran off the edge into the water and died, now thats bad. it shouldnt cost more than 800 to fix.

Why was that a dumb thing to do? The only dumb thing you did was not stay in the car. If you were in the passenger seat you could look over everything he did and easily have just yanked the ebrake at 5mph and any accident would be avoided.

I don't see what's so stupid about letting your little brother drive. As long as you're right next to him and make sure he learns safely, there's no real danger, and it's a bonding experience. I learned to drive stick at 12 or so because my parents weren't stingy a'ssholes with their cars. Your brother feels terrible about what he did and wants to help out... I wouldn't make it a big deal, it's just a learning experience for the both of you.
Props for being a good big bro, and next time stay in the passenger seat!

i'd say leave it, and when ur bro turns 16, give him that car n he'll always remember which is the gas n brake..-= )

honestly tho, if you do want to fix it, might cost as much as the car is worth. So IMO its not worth fixing. Yea, its kinda ugly, but whatever, not like u can't open ur trunk or anything. Glad ur being a good big bro, i'm the youngest out of the 2, my bro never did that kinda stuff for me. He still won't let me drive his car n i'm 21!!!! but luckily my g/f has 2 younger sisters n one younger bro. I got a lot of teaching to do since i know all so much...hehehehehe
