Oil Leak How Serious?

Last week when I was installing my y-pipe I noticed a leak coming from where the transmission attaches to the engine. I looked in the FSM and I believe its the Rear Cover from the Oil Pan. I have an auto transmission with 130,500 miles on it. Currently the oil is not dripping on the ground, but I want to know if I should monitor it, take it to a professional, or change it right away. Also, if anyone has done something like this.

Clean the area and keep your eye on it for a while. Watch how much actually comes out over time. The decide if you want to rip things apart to fix it.

If you're running full-synthetic, that leak will keep going like a hemophiliac. Just run some 10w30 conventional petroleum oil and monitor it until you get it fixed (by replacing a gasket or oilpan).

thanks for the replies. I'm going to take the advise that NJmax had sugested. I been running Amsoil 5w-30 for the last 10,000 miles and I don't think the oil being synthetic would cause the problem to get worst. I still need to check the oil level and whip down the part.

Synthetic oil (esp. 5w30) is much thinner than conventional oil at cold temperatures. I have heard of incidents where oil leaks become worse or apparent for the first time when synthetic is introduced into a system that ran on conventional oil previously. However I dont know if this is your situation, so good luck with your ride.

Thanks for the info. Yea, I've done my fair share of research and that is why I didn't want to go with the Mobil 1 fully synthetic since the symptons you mentioned would appear more severe. This is the first Winter with the Max. I'll keep the org. posted on what happens. I need to look further up in the engine. Right now I'm thinking the repair would be removing the upper oil pan, but I'm looking at the FSM and can't tell if that black rear cover has any sealent behind it.

That leak is from the rear main oil seal (goes over the end crankshaft) in order to replace it you must remove the transmission and then the clutch or torque converter. I replaced mine when I was in there installing the 5th gen clutch and it is a REAL b!tch.

I thought only Manual Transmissions have that rear main seal not automatics.

By the way the Oil level is pretty stable. I can live with this for a while, but i'm sure it will get worst.

No, autos have it too... my car used to be an auto... there is no difference between the engines of MT and AT.

After reading about the RMS I have some questions of how it doesn't affect autos as much as manual transmissions.

First off wouldn't the Drive Plate behind the RMS be affected the same way as the FLY Wheel for Manuals? I would think that it would cause gear slippage as well.

And second does anyone know the name of the tool to put back the OIL Seal Retainer and lower gasket (Half Moon SHape)?
