I'm looking to buy an air filter. Which one is better, cost much will it cost, and what will the gains be?

What kind? Intake,drop in filter, pop charger?

 

K&N if you want to never replace it again, you will not notice any gains by a panel filter. To hear noise, you can get a cone filter, you might gain power that way, but not much.

 

n00b question - what is the diff between each...?

I've got one of those New Amsoil 100k mile filters. Seems to work good. I'll let you know after I put some more miles on it.

 

If you get a K&N panel, take care not to over-oil it when you refresh it....they come oiled from the manufacturer. There have been reports of the oil damaging the MAF. My suggestion is an oem Nissan filter (my Max sees nothing but oem filters, esp oil filter) I have a K&N filter, but its on my shelf and an oem filter is in my car......fuel mileage went to hell with the K&N.

 

I thought K&N are supposed to improve mileage????

 

This may be a stupid question....but what is the point of oiling the K&N filter?

 

Well it didnt improve mileage...I'd like to think that it would. Its reasonable that if teh engine was getting more air, then it would compensate with more fuel to maintain the proper air'fuel mixture. I noticed no performance improvement, just the less mileage.

They come pre-oiled from the factory, but you need to re-oil em if you clean them.

Okay, looks like I going to buy an OEM filter to replace the K&N, hopefully the mileage will be better.

No, no performance. Sound: MAYBE. Stick with paper, they're cheap, you keep your gas mileage (if you replace them when they need it) and they have 0 chance of damaging your MAF. Replacing a filter once and a great while is much easier than cleaning, too. I think I paid $6 for some generic one at the auto parts store.

Someone told me that a filter adds 5hp and it sounded wierd so I thought I'd ask. Thanks to everyone except the before mentioned three.

 

ive got a k&n panel filter i my car now. I have noticed no mileage drop and ive manually calculated the last 3 fillups vs the paper filter so i hate to tell you theres probably something wrong with your car.

STAY AWAY from the short ram (hot air intake) hot air=no good for engine

a real cold air induction that you cut into the fender is probably the best to go with. it will bring in cool air and give you a nice sound. i was also contemplating bypassing the coolant in the tb after the cai install. if you think about it the hot coolant does nothing to help you. remember the colder the air the better. cold air=more dense than hot air. more dense = more vrrooooommmm.....

 

I've been running a K&N panel filter since I bought the car (came with one in it). I switched to a paper filter briefly between buying a new K&N and noticed about a 15% mileage loss with the paper (50-75 miles less per tank). After 2 tanks of gas, I changed back to the K&N. Mileage was still just as low for one tank, but went back to my normal range after 2 more tanks.

I'm sure the mileage would have gone up with the paper too as the ECU adjusted over time. If you didn't reset the ECU when you went to the K&N, you were probably noticing the same phenomenon that I did.

 

You already put yourself even lower by starting this thread. Maybe you shouldn't ask a stupid question next time. Especially one that is answered by researching and not being lazy, and reading the stickies. Then you won't get flamed

Anyway, yeah, you can't beat K&N technology for bang for the buck as well as lifelong usage.

 

This is coming from a guy who thinks spark plugs come in flavors...
