5-speed tranny problem

5-speed tranny problem
My tranny is all messed up and i need to know what it could be so i do not get screwed at the transmission shops around here
in neutral peddle not pressed, i hear rattling... Press teh clutch pettle in and rattle goes away... put it into gear and when i start to move i get a bad whinning sound.. i bought the car from a kid that didnt know how to drive standard... so i was thinking that it was just the clutch and throwout berring... but the more i call around the more people are telling me it may be worse... i dont want to bring it in and have joe shmoe tell me that i need a new tranny.. so i need to know what it is and ruff idea of cost tofix... if i had the tools and a lift and a dry place.. i would pull it apart my self..but im not that brave and no tools and no lift.. and there is snow out there..
I am asking you guys as .. you never let me down before...well some of you anyways...
Would this be a throw out berring and clutch and pressure plate issue or is it something more internal?

Could be the input shaft bearing. If it is rattling then more than likely the throwout bearing. Which is it though? A whine or a rattle? If whining in gear and while you're picking up it may also be the differential bearings.

If it makes noise when the car is in gear, it's not the pressure plate or clutch disc. So I think those are probably ok, although if the kid wasn't properly instructed they might be worn pretty good.
The rattle that goes away when the clutch is pressed sounds like the t/o bearing. The whining sound is probably something else - like the the diff carrier bearings (internal tranny bearings) or bad CVs. Once you have the tranny out, it's about 20min of labor to open it up and look for bad bearings. Usually it's the diff carrier bearings, which can be done DIY if you have the right tools and a clean place to work.

when out of gear sitting idle with no foot on the peddle.. there is a rattle..
Press the Clutch pettle in .. goes quiet and doesnt sound bad at all...
Put it in gear and let of the clutch to engage as soon as i start moving i get w whinning sound.. faster i go the louder and faster the whine.. no matter what gear i am in.. and i dont want to go to fast or too high a gear as i dont want to cause more damage..

Why did you buy this car knowing that it has been abused by a kid who doesn't know how to drive manual?? To me that's a red flag, I don't care if I'm saving 1k from the purchase price. A rebuild usually costs more than $1,000.

I would suggest having everything done at once, then you can put it back and not worry about it again.
Replace all bearings that need it, replace clutch, pp, to bearing, rear main seal, and axle seals.

bought the car becuase i just sold my 96 and wanted another one.. this was a 98 fully loaded SE that was 5 Speed.... it was either me buy an auto and spend money on replacing the tranny or me buying a 5 speed and fixing the damage... and qith only 106k miles on it i figured it was a good deal... even a warn clutch wouldnt be that bad.. but i never heard noises like this on any of my cars befor..
i am dropping it off at the tranny place today and see what they say..
Thanks for the input

Same exact thing that happened to my tranny and i know how to drive standard. Maxima 5speed trannys aren't the best. It is the input shaft bearing. Sorry man

you have a bad main transmission bearing, when you push the clutch in the fact that the sound goes away verifies this. You best bet is to source a new transmission or a used one that isnt making noise. I just dumped a 1995 se i because of this issue. I didnt wanna bother..let me know how you make out.

It is NOT the throwout bearing. The throwout bearing symptoms would be exactly the OPPOSITE of what he is describing. The throwout could only make noise when his foot was ON the clutch (pedal depressed), when his foot is not on the clutch the T/O bearing isn't even being used.... It is the input shaft bearing. There is no doubt. I work in a trans shop, I've experienced the problem in two of my own maximas, plus multiple friend's maximas, etc. It's the ball bearing on the input shaft, cut and dried. I've got pics of a torn down trans right now with a pad input shaft bearing.
Stop suggesting the T/O bearing guys, that's not it.

thanks guys... now i am in the market for either a shop that will work on it cheaper than 2k or a used tranny with no problems..
shop told me that it is either an input berring (he said internal berrings) or a broken or misshapes tooth on one of the gears... he quoteds low end of about 1800 and can go as much as 3100... no way...
I live in NH and the place i took it to was in Hudson called freddies...

I could probably do the entire operation at this point in about 4 hours. It's really easy for a shop to do it with the right tools. The bearing itself costs like $32.

Bearings are there to minimize metal to metal friction, allows for smooth rotation of moving parts. The more friction there is, the hotter things get. Overheating breaks down anything. Common sense.

Pretty much, yeah. Flakes of metal will wear off the bearing until the ***** start losing their precise size, at which point the bearing will get sloppy. Then the gear teeth won't be held precisely together, and the oil seals may start to leak. With enough wear, you might shatter the gear teeth because when they aren't held with the right spacing they are more prone to breakage.

umm, if it makes the sound its in nutreal and when its in gear.....it always makes the sound.....so how would we know if it has anything to do with the tranni....

im experiencing something similar to this, my car will make a chattering sound while standing at a light in neutral....it will also make a strange noise while driving in any gear at low rpms...even in 5th on the highway at 2k rpm, if i get on the gas it will make the sound for a second or two, i also get a chattering noise when im getting of the clutch from a standstill, if i hold the clutch at the engagement point the noise persists....if i rev the engine past 2k when getting of the clutch there is no noise
can this be a timing chain rattle, or do you think its the tranny...i really cant afford a rebuild now so i hope thats not it.

i highly doubt its the timing chain rattle as the timing chain would rattle all the time not just when in gear or when in neutral...
i had the barrings all replaced and there is no more sound... take it to a tranny shop and have them drive it or listen to it... i am pretty sure you have the same problem i had..
