1st Gear 50mph 3200rpms???

Well today i was showing my girl where i was in an accident acouple of days ago in my friend car and as i was leaving i was having a hard time getting the car into first gear. So i just took ok in 2nd. Later on down the road at a light i got it into 1st gear so then i took off and the car just boggs then starts to go. So i pull into a parking lot and get out can smell the clutch burning. Hard time getting back into first take off in 2nd and then reach the light to get out of the parking lot and got it into 1st. I took off and the car boggs. Then picks up and i kept driving and noticed that i was able to go 50mph in 1st gear?? at only 3200rpms. Wondering what was going on i shifted into 2nd and the rmps jump up so then i went to 3rd and it was fine. Reached a light and put it into 1st and it bogged out again when i was driving so i just gave up and took the car home. Does anyone have an idea of what might be wrong with my car?

Exedy Stage 1 Clutch
V1 Supercharger
Stock Shifter

Thanks for any help, sorry for the long story.
-Tom

even with a slipping clutch I can't figure out how you would get to 50 in first (unless you were going down a steep hill)... and it sounds like the clutch isn't disengaging either... def check fluid...

well, the speedo said 50, you most definitely weren't going 50..so you could check your speed sensor, but it definitely sounds like a clutch problem. Check the fluid in the reservoir...and it could be time to change it out.

You were really in third. Your tranny didn't let you into first so you thought the leftmost upper gear was first, when in reality it was third. That's why it felt like your car was bogging, you were trying to start in third gear. That's also why you roasted your clutch, you had to slip it a crapload to start in third.

Theory

I think the 3rd gear theory makes the most sense. Either way, some like some clutch work is in store. Either blead it, or it will blead you, or else get it replaced, or it will leave you stranded some place.

For Third Gear! It was probably a simple mistake and you started in third gear. That explains the burning clutch since you would have had to slip it like a **** to get it to start in 3rd.

Check your clutch fluid ASAP. If that looks cool, than get it checked out by someone soon. Sorry I don't know more about our 5-speeds, my Max is an auto.

Thats what im hoping that it was just 3rd gear but at the one light i went from slowing down in third to a stop then shifted took it out of third and it went into first easy or at least where 1st normally is. Im goning to go have someone look at it today and see what they think but first ill check the clutch fluid and the other things you guys mentioned. Thanks so far ill keep you updated.

I definately think you were in third and not first, but I agree there are problems evident since to couldn't get it into first.

You were not in first, regardless of where your shifter was positioned. It is not possible. Things can happen with the shift selector and the shift rail fingers inside the trans that you would be in 3rd when the shifter was in the first gear position, but you could not have been in 1st and been at 50mph, it is not physically possible. At 50mph in 1st gear you would be at about 8800rpm...

Im not arguing with anyone because most likely you guys are right thats why im here asking the question. But anyways i just check the fluid and its above max but i havent added anything to it and before it used to be right at if not alittle below max. So i guess i should bleed the clutch then. Thanks Neal for proving me completely wrong but i was just saying what i thought but im not the expert here.

Yup, you were in third, and you probably need a new clutch now.

just like everyone said, either started off in 3rd gear (most likely) or a slipping clutch.
i think when you are rolling at 50mph on third, you are usually around the 3200rpm range.

Ok so i took the car out today and yes it does go straight into 3rd. When I try and put it into 1st it just moves right to third gear. So i took it down the street and we looked at it. But still no idea whats wrong externally. They told me i need to take it to a transmission specialist to check it out or just dont use first and start off in 2nd all the time. Theres the update for today. So im goning to start looking for some trannys.

Got the car back today, not 100% but close to it. There was a problem with the shifter causing it to not go into 1st gear. I needed the car for monday so im driving it around now but will have to take it back so its completely done within the week.

In the meantime, lemme barrow your supercharger

5spd problems blow, i need to replace a TO bearing sometime in the summer. Hope your car gets back to normal soon. I know i would if i was boosted :

I'm a newbie just getting familiar with the forum, I was wondering if the 6speed tranny gives you the same problems, has anyone tried to put a 03 engine and trans in a 98 maxima.

It might not be the tranny giving me the problems. It could just be the shifter and it has a short throw on it but alot of the other maximas that ive see that have the short throw seem alot smaller. But to answer the other questions fast, yes and yes just maybe not into a 98 but a 4th gen. Tilley99 does the swaps around us if your from philly $3k for just the engine swap and alot more for the 6spd. Do yourself a big favor donate so you can search and have access to the off-topic forum you will learn alot fast with things since most people dont want to give you information right away especially if your a newbie. Also read the stickies all of them you will learn most the answers to your questions in them, and even read the ones with all the differnet forums, (3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th all motor and some of the other ones). Wellcome to maxima.org

OK another update. The cars dead. The tranny started leaking oil and now i got to have the tranny replaced. My look into parting out everything in the car, Super Charger and all. Then get rid of the maxima and move on to something like a Titan or a 5th gen.

Sure you don't just want to get a 5sp swap...?

Why don't you just replace the tranny? I had the exact same thing happen. Lost 1st, then 2nd, sometimes 3rd, until one day all my gear oil spilled out in a parking lot.

Nah all sorts of things were about to go wrong in the 97. The auto tranny was about to go. The rear calipers were sticking, needed new brakes all around, I need another o2 sensor. Im lucky i got $5600 for it.

I will replace the tranny, i just dont know when i want to do it. I might just buy a beater car until spring time so everything is fixed in the max. That beaters a 198X Porsche 944 possibly. I dont know what i want to do yet im so confused about this car.

car seemed fine to me when i drove it home, however i wouldnt just ditch the car. i mean just because u get out of this one, doesnt mean ur gonna get into another one and have the same problem with the next one. keep ur eye out cause u can always find a used trans. or even if u want, buy a new one.

Well i got the car towed today. Got onto the flat bed alright but taken it off sucked. The car got stuck in gear and parts of the tranny were left on the flat bed.

No one put it in neutral to roll it onto and off of the flat bed? The towing guys damaged the car?

no we had it in netural getting on to the flat bed. Then i guess he put it in netural for the ride and then getting it off the flat bed it was stuck in gear. I dont think its a good idea moving all the gears when there isnt any fluid in the tranny.
