Those who have taken their steering wheel off

It says in the Haynes manual that you need a special tool to take out the torx screws holding in the airbag, is that true. Does anyone know the part number for the torx screws that your suppose to put back in with the special sealant?

well they're not technically torx screws because there needs to be a hole in the middle of the bit for the nipple to go into. you can get the right bit at most auto stores. I dunno about the part number for the screws but it shouldn't really matter if they have sealant or not

I recently replaced mine on my 97. I called Autozone and Advance and neither one had them. I had to buy the whole set at Sears($27). You need either a T40 or T45. A T50 was too big. I'm pretty sure it was a T45. As mentioned, they are referred to tamper proof torx bits.

hey its always good to have these in the tool box anyhow. they work for regular torx as well, so its a good investment.

You don't need jack (in regards to special tools). This is how I got mine off:

I took a flat head (medium sized) and put into one of the sides of the bolt (inside the shape) and twisted that way. First time was kind of hard...get the flat head in there good...it won't hurt the bolt any so it's okay to put some pressure on it.

Also...when you get to the actual nut that holds the wheel...it says you need a special tool to pull the wheel off...just wiggle it side to side and it'll come off. I've taken my bags/wheel off numerous times.

If this doesn't work for you...then you have to go by that stupid tool. I personally...had no use for it. I used a go-around that cost me $0.

sorry to "*****" the thread, but will the air bag still be functional if its swapped with a newer model one like a 97 steering wheel?
the look of my wheel on the 95 is just ugly.
