link for stud replacement?

Forgive me I know I saw the link for replacing wheel studs but I cant find it in the stickies and Kevlos' search isnt working for me.

I'm up to 3 stripped wheel studs on passenger side wheel, Its time to replace them before I'm down to two. I saw a tool to pop them out in autozone, but I was in a rush and didnt look at it.

Isnt the process. . .Wheel off>caliper etc off> rotor off> bang out with hammer, bang in new with hammer?

Do I go dealership with this or local auto store? Local auto store (advanced) has some from $3 to $13 a piece.

Thanks.

You've got the sequence right. The only thing is i don't see how in the world you'd use a hammer to bang the new ones in. There's just not enough room. The way i did it is i used a bunch of 7/16" washers and threaded a lug nut onto the new stud. I kept turning the lug nut (used an impact wrench actually) until the stud was completely seated.

Yea, thats what the haynes is suggesting also.

bang the old ones out (I think autozone has a tool I could rent to do this), then put some washers on the front of the stud, and tignten with lug will the stud is seated?

Yup that's it. And don't bother with that tool. A few good whacks with a hammer will dislodge the old studs. BTW the correct sized washers are 7/16".

Thanks, I was just looking for the tool at autozone's web site but then your reply poped up.

Thanks, going to get some studs from advanced, and pick up some washers from home depot.

hub was off the car?

or did your bang the bottom stud, then rotate the next stud to be at the bottom, so you could go under and bang?

just bang and rotate. i wasn't able to get it COMPLETELY seated flush with the hammer because of the angle you have to swing from, but it was only about a millimeter left, which i finished by pulling through with a lug nut. i tried doing the entire thing with a lug nut but it ended up just spinning the stud rather than pulling it through.

I like the hammer and rotate technique, I'll use that if using a lug nut takes too long.

Yea, as everyone else said that's pretty much it. I didn't have my impact wrench yet when I had to replace all 5 on my driver's rear on my '95, so that sucked, doing it manually with a tire iron. With an impact wrench it's much much easier, as I found out when doing a few on my '87.

I got mine from advance auto for like $0.89/pc, whereas Oreilly's had them for like $1.86/pc.
