I replaced the mast on my wife's '93 and I think it would similar to a 4th gen. I've never replaced it on my 98. They say the motor itself is supposed to last the life of the car.
It's actually not hard to do. If you look at the base of your mast you should see that silver ring. In that ring are two very small holes. You need a tool that will go into those holes so you can turn the ring and remove the mast. The tool is probably $17 or I think that's what I paid for it. There might be another way apart from getting the tool but I don't know what it is.
If you hear it trying to go up but doesn't then your motor it fine. Otherwise you'll need to do some work in the trunk to remove the motor.

+1, when i got mine used a little over a year ago, it did the same thing. i ended up unplugging the motor to avoid the noise.Originally Posted by LeVeL

yeah i've been having a similar issue. I can hear mine as well, but it doesn't work so i've manually just pulled it up so it still works when i need it (which is only when using my ipod, otherwise i'm on XM). I figured mine is the motor so i'm planning on just ordering a new one b/c clearly somethings not working. found it online for like $35 (used obviously)
if your reception is fine, i would just push the antenna in and unplug the cord that makes it go up. that's what i did on my car. my radio reception is still fine and my antenna now just stays down.

Do you like using your radio more or your CD? Either way I disconnected mine and I barely use the Radio, I get better quality from my CD then the radio and to much BLAH BLAH BLAH on the radio so CD is the best way to go. Just disconnect it and you won't ever have a problem with it ever again, until you connect it again. Also prob easier to disconnect it then to replace it.

Uhh... cd is broken lol. Speaking of which, I know on some cars you need some kind of codes to get the stereo to work (you cant pull a cd player off one accord and put it into another for example). Is the Max like that too or will a junkyard stereo work?

is there a cheap fix to make the mast go up, as ling as the motor is making noise? like a new mast or gears or something? if it costs less than $20 i might consider fixing mine.
