Is auto supposed to roll back on a hill?

When I had my stock tranny even on steep hills the auto would creep forward. Now I have a rebuilt semi-bullet proof and I don't think it creeps up hills like it used too, is that normal though?

I have a Pro Torque Torque converter stall speed is like 3000 I think. My rental Scion TC has a stall speed of 2800 even that creeps up hills very slowly but surely depending how steep it is.

My idle is lower than stock because of the 00VI setup I have(Not running a IACV) and my auto will roll back as well... It didnt do it when I maintained a good high idle.

As far as I remember, fully stock and working my 95 auto would creep up small grades, and pretty much stand still on steeper ones. Now that the tranny is completely ****ed, though, I roll back down hills in 1, 2, D unless I give it some gas to 'catch', and just sitting there after removing my foot from the brake it won't move at all unless, once again, I give it some gas to catch.

But yea, that high stall TC might have something to do with it... How's that high stall for daily driving or stop and go, btw? And if you don't mind me asking, how much did that sort of rebuild cost you? I'm thinking of staying auto and getting bulletproof vs 5MT swap.

Mine will stand still when once it's warmed up, but since I idle at ~500 in gear until the car warms up (don't ask) my car will roll back verrrryyy slowly. I've gotten used to having to left-foot brake on some of the really steep hills where I live.

Mine rolls back on really steep hills, otherwise it sits or rolls forward

Must be your High Stall TC mate, Maxes are great at not rolling on hills. Several other cars I have driven have rolled back a good foot before I could apply the right amount of pressure on the foot brake - without 'jamming' it down and scaring myself, the guy behind me and the pedestrians walking by.

Think the standard stall on a 4th Gen is 2,000-2,100rpm. That's what it is on mine.

BTW - does your high stall allow you to launch @ 3,000rpm when you 'power launch' HarrisH? Make you much faster in 1/4?

Cheers,

I am fully stock and when driving up the ramp at the mall, I roll back down. I am Auto, FYI. I use left-foot brake cuz got scared I might hit the people behind me by the time I put my right-foot on the gas. lol

I hate to jack the thread but it deals with rolling. Today i got in my max and drove up the ramp on Church street (For all you UGA fans). When I got to the red light I let go of the break and I started rolling back as if I were in neutral, flipped out, and slammed on my breaks.
Normally I can just sit on the hill and will creep forward.

My tranny has been acting up BIG time recently. Hard shifts in 1-2 and 2-3 as well as hesitation and weaker acceleration.

My noob question is *drum roll* should I expect the tranny to croak and leave me on a corner or just get progressively worse and annoying.

It will get worse and worse - they're near bullet proof boxes. Scrhale, get your transmission fully flushed and replace the fluid.

If you do it yourself - it will take at least 10-12 litres of ATF - not ATL Georgia Boy.

I was with the car today rolled up on a slight driveway incline after raising my idle a lil' bit, it stayed there attempting to roll forward, did the same with the Scion TC, it did the same thing. On certain points of the small incline it did roll forward but it did not roll back, it only rolled back when I didn't completely make it up a bump that was on the driveway incline, I did this on purpose to see how it would act, it rolled back a little then stayed smooth then slowly attempted to creep forward. On a flat surface it will roll forward I'll assume at 3 MPH.

I was told that fully flushing and replacing the fluid could cause problems if the car has not been recieving new fluid at the correct mileage/time interval that it should. True?

Sorry bro, I can't help you there.

But I can't see the logic in that statement though mate - flushing the system cleans out the residue build-up in the transmission that makes a slush box slip and slow shift. Don't see why it would hurt a 'box to flush it out at an unscheduled time.

Your choice though bro - best of luck and I hope it puts the 'sting' back in your Maxes' tail.
