how long until bearing fails?

I bought the car in february of last year and noticed that the front end humms when im on the on-ramp of highways going light on the gas and eventually found out from someone on here that it is my bearings causing the humm/vibration. My question is as the title suggest that how long can I keep driving my car like this if I continue to go easy when on on-ramps? If it does fail when driving what can happen and any suggestions as to get a replacement if I have to whether it be aftermarket or OEM? Thanks.

It will get worse and worse as times goes on, you should use your sense in order to judge when is a good time to change it.

I personally do no think it will fail during driving, if you're so paranoid, get a new one, less than 50$ installed.

If you can get one for $50 installed jump on it, you'd be luckey to find the parts for less than $50. In a thread a week ago somebody said they were quoted $600 for both sides ($300 each) installed.

Who diagnosed it as a wheel bearing? A humming noise can be caused by many things, including wheel bearings.

I recently paid $330 for a front driver's side bearing replacement. It ain't cheap, but then again, it's a car.
I also noticed the car slightly pulling to the left, and highway trips were very annoying. The car was ridiculously quieter when I replaced it, and drove straight. You'll be happy when you do.

"jasonv" was the one who answered my last post about humming in the front end and mentioned wheel bearing. I dont think its a CV because my old Mazda 626 had that and it was a clicking noise on every turn. This only seems to happen at 40+ on a slight right turn more so then a left one on the on-ramps. I havent heard or felt it around town probably because im going to slow for it to happen. Any way to diagnose what it could be?

Bearings really dont fail per say. They just continue to chew themselves and the hub up.

This is true, my wheel bearing was replaced recently and was bad enough to damage the hub. Over time as the bearing gets more play in it, it will develop into a clunking, normally on deceleration. I don't think it would cause you to wreck the car, since the bearing/hub are sanwhiched between the out axle nut and the axle. But if you can catch it before you need a new hub definitely get it replaced ASAP, so as to save you the additional cost of a new hub and seals (~$170 in parts from the dealer).

^ True cause there is just about no way to press the parts together with out air tools and some sort of jig. You can use a ball joint kit ala Stephen Max Style.

There's a good chance it's a wheel bearing but there's a good chance it could be something else as well. It could be a tire noise due to incorrect allignment or a number of other things.

If you want to diagnose it yourself jack the car and put it on jack stands, put your hands on the tire at the 6 and 12 o'clock positions and try pushing and pulling the wheel staight in and out... there shouldn't be any play.

If you have a trusted mechanic take it in and tell him about the noise and see what he finds. If it's not a cheap fix get a second opinion. I wouldn't even tell him that you suspect it's a wheel bearing just describe the noise, etc. and ask for an estimate.

Try looking for a simular thread from last week there was lots of discussion about replacing the wheel bearing.

The seals are generally replaced when replacing the bearing. But you're correct in that hub and/or knuckle could get damaged and would cost much more.

I almost forgot to mention another little thing with my front end that happened. About 2 weeks ago I took a full hard right out of my street because I came at the turn wrong and had to step on the gas decently to beat the oncoming traffic and heard a rather loud and nasty grinding-metalish noise out of my front end. That noise related to this bearing or possible CV joint issue?

Is it proportional to engine/tranny speed, vehicle speed?

Id say i must have been on the gas to about 2800 maybe 3000 rpms from a dead stop with the wheel full right. I didnt really pay attention to it, but it wasnt a tap on the gas I had to move to beat the traffic.

Do you think this would be a good check to see if the bearing is bad: Jack up the car and take the tire off. Put the car in gear and let the axle spin. Put a long screw driver on the end of the axle. Listen for noise that could be caused by the bearing? I am having possible bearing issues and wanted to know if this would be a good check. Also, madcatmk2 could use this...
