You can rent a spring compressor at a local auto parts store like kragen or autozone. There is a write up in the how tos.

Check the 5th gen stickys(how to's), housecor and a few other have a very informative write-up that is essentially the same procedure as the 4th gen.

rent the compressors from autozone for free. when i did mine, i had to use it to take the stocks off, but the tokico springs went on w/o a compressor.

Using floor jacks to compress springs sounds real dangerous.

Yes, two jacks is a very bad idea. Just do the autozone thing or take it
to a machine shop. I'd just get the spring compressor myself.

What setup did you go with? What kind of shocks?
Spring compressing is definately not something you want to fool around with - even with the right tools it can become very dangerous when used incorrectly. My girlfriends father once told me a story about someone in his shop using spring compressors the wrong way, which sent the shock (or spring, can't remember) through the wall. Something to think about...

you guys have never removed springs without a compressor huh? there is almost no tension. the parts hardly move. not that i recommend it, but it sure as heck not going to kill you. most lowering springs dont need a compressor to be installed.

FWIW, I just compressed my stock rears by hand. Ok, my 200lb body was on it but it was enough to get maybe an inch of movement.

I'm not familiar with max's, but some cars you NEED to have the spring compressor, unless you want to have your neighbor to find you dead with a spring shot through your face.

I've done rears without a compressor sure. But the sport springs on my
fronts needed to compress 3 dead coils. That's a lot of stored energy
I'd rather not risk letting loose in my face. Bit I'm a bit ****.

Sure, you can try it on reassembly. You won't hurt anything by *trying* to compress the spring and going nowhere. And if you're going to compress it with your body weight, you need to be able to compress the mount all the way down on the strut shaft - do NOT use the nut on the end of the shaft to tighten down the parts. That could damage the threads and cause the nut to come loose later.

However, if you're disassembling, do not take it apart w/o compressors since you can't be sure how much the spring will want to kick. Even if you think they are lowering springs, treat them like they are heavily compressed. But I personally don't miss people who do stupid things and die, so it's your choice.

I've never heard of settling time on a properly installed spring.

springs arent supposed to settle, but the rubber parts may.

Actually, I believe the springs do settle...I have the tein s-techs with kyb-agxs and it took about a week to fully settle...some may disagree, but this is my personal experience...hopefully this answers your ? about settling...

I have read that I quality spring will not settle (can't remember if it was on the H&R site or not). I think it may be more in line with what Jsutter mentioned about the rubber parts.
