Smog Help

Ok guys, I took my car into get smogged today. It didn't pass to say the least. I bought it for dirt cheap so no matter what I am getting a good deal. The guy I bought it from didn't smog it for me, so Im left to deal with this crap. I have the option of paying a guy $200 dollars to smog it for me in L.A. without it being 100% percent legal if you know what I mean. Its kinda sketchy, so I'd rather do it legally. Ok so my check engine light is on, so that is an immediate fail, i know that, but i fixed the knock sensor code, but there are three o2 sensor codes. P0135 02 Sensor heater Fault (Bank 1 Sensor 2), P0155 02 sensor heather fault (Bank 2 Sensor 1), P0141 02 sensor heater fault (bank 1 sensor 2). The other codes are P0325 Knock Sensor 1 CKT Malfunction, and P0443 EVAP Purge CTRL Valve CKT Malfunction. That is the one Im most concerned about. The EVAP code just came up recently, and I just replaced the Knock Sensor and got the power back from the engine, but Im still getting the code. what should I do? what is the EVAP purge CNTRL valve, should I fix it, does it affect performance, I guess what I'm asking is should i just bribe this guy for $200 bucks to pass the car or should i fix these things. I passed 2 out of 3 of the Emissions test. I failed the test under the NO (PPM) category, but passed the CO %, and the HC (PPM). Hopefully someone has some suggestions, sorry im kinda making this a really long post oh well. thanx for the help guys.[/IMG]

You need to replace all 3 O2 sensors. There are 2 in the y-pipe before the catalytic converter and one after the catalytic converter.

Check www.oxygensensors.com for good prices and service. Mention maxima.org for a discount.

The KS code will keep showing up until you fix the o2 sensors... so ignore that for now.

The high NO numbers -> was your car fully warmed up at test time? EGR systems help reduce NOx emissions - so you might need to look at the EGR system (the guide tube gets clogged) to help reduce those emissions.

I'm not familiar with the evap system - so hopefully someone else can help you with that.

It's a good time to spend the 20 bucks or so on a Haynes/Chiltons.

Replace all three O2's as njmodi says. Clean the codes and see if the EVAP code comes back. The EVAP system is the system that traps and burns off vapors from your fuel system. You may have to replace the purge valve to get it working correctly.

After you replace the O2's your emissions should be much better.

whats up guys, im new to the org. but ive been reading through it for a bit.
anyway dont you think its kinda funney that all 3 sensors are bad? i had the same problem a time ago, keep getting the o2 sensor heater fault, replaced it and the code came back. turned out to be a circuit fault. check the fuse inside the car its a 15 amp fuse i think.

Excellent first post and suggestion. The fuse may indeed be bad. It is in the in-cabin fuse box - right near the drivers left leg.

Is it one fuse for one 02 sensor or is it just a main fuse for all the 02 sensors? How can I tell if its bad. will it be burnt out or black? thanx so much for the suggestion man. and that definately is a good first post. I mean will I be able to tell if its the fuse just by looking at it? That would be great if it was that easy as a fuse. Unlikely though since the KS was bad and I'm getting that EVAP thing... Right or wrong????

O2 has nothing to do with the EVAP and O2 sensor codes won't be tripped by the KS (but the KS may be tripped by the O2).

There is a single fuse in the fuse box on the inside of your car - near the drivers left leg.

It is a single 15A fuse for all 3 sensors. If you pull the fuse and notice that it has broken (i.e. the wire in side should be continuous), then you can replace it with another working 15A fuse.

If you are not sure whether the fuse is blown or not, pull another fuse for something you know that works, e.g. since the car starts, you know the fuel pump fuse is fine (so you can compare with that).

There is a diagram showing all the fuse locations on the back of the fuse panel cover.

Oh I thought the Evap stuff was the same type as the o2 codes. damn. How much is it to replace the EVAP purge CNTRL valve. Are the 02 sensors hard to install. They dont seem to difficult.
