I thought it was the trunk torsion bars hitting each other and making this annoying creaking/grating sound whenever going over bumps. This noise is coming from back, inside or around the trunk on the drivers side. I had the car on the lift yesterday and looked at the springs, they seem fine (maxspeeds with 20k on them)

This noise is driving me nuts and its been about 2 months. I have my suspicion on the rear dash, where the corner speaker is or some thing. I cant isolate the noise to where exactly its coming from. Maybe any of you guys have dealt with this and can shed some light.

I have to drive with the music loud.

 

Could it be the spring rubbing against the spring seats? this is a very common problem. Did you use the rubber spring isolators at the top and bottom of the springs when they were installed?

 

Jeff @ Maximum Tuning installed them for me a year ago, I have to go to him this weekend so I will tell him to check.

 

I have that same squeak...and I'm fairly certain that it is my rear dash as well. When I cut side to side, Left to right and back, I can hear it. I play my music loud as well.

 

If its the dash then what could be causing that.

 

mine squeek but only when i go over bumps or dips. I'll have to check the spring isolators. Anyone know the part numbers?

 

I had the same problem when going over speed bumps. I replaced the spring seat, the bushing that goes above it and the bushing that goes below it. The parts were replaced after 160k miles and stock suspension. The old parts didn't look too worn but the noise is gone. It was so bad I heard the noise just going over bumps on the road.

Part numbers per side:

Seat: 55034-31U00
Bushing:56218-61L10
Bushing: 56217-61L10

 

Do you get the same noise when you turn into\out of a driveway or something like that also? I have been getting that for the longest time... I thought it might have something to do with the bolts on top of the shock.

 

I'll assume the noise you hear when turning the wheel is coming from the front of the car. This is most likely caused by a faulty strut mount bearing. It allows the spring to turn freely upong steering wheel movement. When it fails, the spring does not turn freely, it twists in its place. It is actually the spring making the noise but only becasue the bearing is bad.

 

no, it comes from the back shocks for sure. It happens when I turn in at an angle...the front of the car is higher that the rear.

 

So the noise is only heard from the rear when you are turning at an angle? That is weird. How many miles are on your car? Is your suspension stock?

I am not sure I can be of much help but make sure your shock is in good shape.

You also mentioned the bolts earlier...there are 3 per side and are part of the shock mount. You may have a broken nut that secures the the mount to the car...I did.

 

a broken nut huh? i'll have to check it out.

 

that happened to me before... i checked the wheels nothing there... i opened the trunk... checked the car lift on the compartment on the right... it was just loose on its cradle. It was squeeking. I tightened it and problem solved.

 

mines squeeking but thats b/c no rubber spring thing on top and bottom..

i can' only hear it when getting in and out of the car

 

I figured out my problem. In the left hand corner of the trunk, there is a big square hole(3x3 inches) along with several small circular holes. Inside there is where the noise is coming from. I think some thing inside there is broken and I cant look inside it to see whats exactly broken. So I filled that part up with liquid foam and that problem seems to have gone away. No more squeak as of yet, I only drove it for 10 mins though. I will drive more tomorrow and test for it.

 

i had a problem like that but it was more of a rattle but mine turned out to be just gravel stuck in a heat shield

 

part of my rattle was the fuel-door release cable. it was only partially secured, and tapped against the inner wheelwell ( get to this from the trunk & remove rear seat )and frame behind the rear seat. duct tape and foam padding stopped it. now if i can find the other rattles.

 

the mount bushing on the rear strut mounts go bad... that cuases it.. im riding iwth it now.. im waitin to get illuminas so i can jsut do a everything at one time...

 

Have someone sit in the back and listen and hold down certain areas, move around, they should be able to find it. Or you can sit back there, if you have someone to drive your car, since you have heard the noise before.

 

i have a rattle coming from the back as well, it seems like my spoiler is loose and shakes against the trunk

 

I also have a noise coming from the rear of my max. Though it is more of a groan/chatter than a rattle. However, I had a similar sound that hit me around 25k miles which was traced back to the rear window. After having the rear window reset the problem went away for approx 70k miles...

 

check the exhast mine was hitting the axel when I went over some bumps.

 

today i rid myself of the annoying rattle in the trunk. like HomerMac said, the bushings on the top of the rear struts were bad. on mine the rubber lip that kept the piston rod centered, wore out on one side and allowed the rod side to side movement, thus the rattle as it tapped the upper mount. new bushing on top = no rattle!! and i did it on the car, pita but it worked for me.

 

Creak noise from entering an angled driveway, speedbump is in the TSB about the rear seat metal brace(behind rear backrest) needs either to be tightened and or add squeek tape, did it for my friends max,95. Look in the TSB's it is in there, might be your problem.
