Transmission Filter nut removal issues .. heed help

hey guys, my axel on drivers side broke, and i thought it would be a good idea to flush the tranny fluid and change the filter. Everything was going great until i came accross the one nut that holds the filter in. When i try to unscrew the nut, the whole things (nut together with the bolt that i can't see the top of) just keeps spinning and i can't take it off. Is the bolt part supposed to be permanently attached to the tranny? I though it shoul've been. Do you have any suggestions on how to take it off. I tried using pliers to hold then bolt while turning the nut, but i got now where. Have any of you had this issue?

another thing, let's say it's the worst case scenario and i can't get the filter out. Is it a big deal? Does the filter catch stuff from the top of the transmission, or from the bottom where the pan and magnets are?

Just clean the pan and magnet and call it a day. I know others have had the same problem with the filter.

A few years back I bought a trannsmission filter for a '99 i30 and promptly returned it after I read the warning inside, it went something like this: on some models, removing the transmission filter will cause the 'I forget what they called it' nut located above the filter to become dislocated, requiring professional removal of the valve body. Sounds like that is what happened to you, I wouldn't want to drive it like that.

screw it, I'm just putting it back reinstalling the axel and selling the car. Thanks for quick reply's guys. I like it, i didn't even have time to go to the bathroom. I'm kina done with this maxima, and automatic transmissions all together. Time for a black interior max and most likely a transmission swap, can't find any manuals where i'm at.
