I brought my 97 Max in for an oil change at a local Nissan dealer. I've had the car since March. I know the car is coming up on 60,000 miles , and I know that the oil, tranmission fluid, and air filter should all be changed around this time. The dealer told me that my belts were "dry" and would need to be replaced , have you heard of this ? I've been around cars all my life, I've never had a problem with the timing belts on this one and the engine runs just fine. They gave me an estimate of $595 for the complete service to be done , which I think is ridiculous. What (from your knowledge) is the average price of a 60,000 Mile service for the Maxima ?

The dealer meant the accessory belts as your engine does'nt use a timing belt(it uses chains)

He probably doesn't know how much a dealer will charge because as his sig clearly states, he is a DIY mechanic.

Why not call another dealer and a local mechanic in the area?? If Daniel said "it only costs $10" what are you going to do?? Demand that the dealer lower it's prices?? I doubt that will happen. Just for your information, the cost of repairs = the amount you have to pay from 1) the dealer 2)local mechanic or 3) cost of parts from doing it yourself. The cost from where ever Daniel resides is sort of irrevelant correct??

But if you do get it done at the dealer, ask for the 10% discount coupon. Sometimes they have them lying around.

How do you know, smartypants? You don't even have a VQ. You're just lucky you got it right.

He probably doesn't know how much a dealer will charge because as his sig clearly states, he is a DIY mechanic.

Thanks for speaking for him. ONLY a post by Daniel himself saying the exact same thing will make me happy. And, no, I don't care if he has already stated it. I don't like to search.

Why not call another dealer and a local mechanic in the area??

Why don't you do it for me, and post the results in every forum so I can clearly see it?

If Daniel said "it only costs $10" what are you going to do??

Believe it fully, even if encapsulated with <sarcasm> </sarcasm>.

Demand that the dealer lower it's prices?? I doubt that will happen.

I didn't ask YOU, I asked DANIEL. Are you DANIEL or JEFF? Plus, I'm sure you're wrong anyway.

The cost from where ever Daniel resides is sort of irrevelant correct??

No. Only Daniel can be correct, not you. Sorry.

I was just checking. I can change the oil ,transmission fluid, and air filter myself. I won't attempt the accessory belts because I just don't have the equipment to do so.

JiggsHall,

Sorry about the flame, there. Jeff left himself open for that blindside.....

Anyhoo, as for drivebelts, and decent local mechanic can do that......for much less than a dealer.

Unless it's a Nissan specific problem, don't even waste your time at a Nissan dealer to get service. Find a good local mechanic (one that usually works on Nissans is best)

I can't imagine a complete 60k service costing over $300 if you do most things yourself and have a local mechanic do the drivebelts......

LOL, 595 for a little tune up, WTF!! Lets see here, spark plugs $70, tranny fluid change{if it's a 5speed} $15, oil change $15, air filter $5-15, know as for your belts being dry? I never heard that one before and I I highly dow't they need to be changed. But if you were to change your belt{yourself} then it would be about $20. So in the grand sceem of things the total is=$125-150. Labor on these parts is less the 3 hours{for me}. Do it your self it's fun and easy.

Thanks

Thanks for the advice Bill and Emaz . I'm going to do the fluids and plugs myself.I have a good local mechanic I'll bring it to from now on. I've learned my lesson in dealing with the dealerships .

That seems awfully high for the 60K service procedure. Perhaps this dealer has his own list of 60K service items which goes far beyond the Nissan requirements. Emax95 suggested you do this work yourself. That's a good idea. You can buy the parts at a discount. Even Nissan factory parts can be bought by mail order at a discount. You don't have to do all the work on the same day. Perhaps you would do the oil/filter on one day, the plugs on a second day, the coolant change on a third day. If you space it out, the 60K work won't seem like a burden.

If you prefer to pay a professional to do your automotive service work, ask around town about the independent service providers. You might find an experienced Nissan dealer tech who opened his own shop. That's a good man to know!

Accessory drive belts usually last longer than 60K miles. Please refer to the Haynes repair manual (page 1-15) for further information. Haynes has good photos of acceptable and unacceptable belt wear conditions. The dealer may be too eager to replace your belts because it is an easy profit-maker for him.

Thanks Daniel

Thanks for the advice Daniel . Is there any place online that I could by the Haynes manual ? I want to get one for both of my vehicles. I'm sure the dealer wanted to make a profit on the belts , the were charging $135 plus tax just to perform that service.
