Steering rack boots

When i parked my car today i noticed some fluid was leaking from both sides after looking in my wheel wells i found this

Both of my steering rack boots are torn and leaking, I have been driving with out a power steering belt for about a week could this have caused both of the boots to tear at the same time because they were ok a couple of weeks ago, and will this cause more damage if driven like this for a little while until it can be fixed.

Looks like a new steering rack for you. Once they start to leak like that its good night nurse. Its going to be expensive too.

Actually, I bought a good low mileage rack for $100 recently, but of course the installation is the sucky part.

And yes, leaking at the boots = dead rack.

I had been fighting a rack problem for some time, not wanting to believe it was the rack causing my clunks in the front end.

I had torn boots, just a small bit of leaking, etc. There were clunks when I turned the wheel, clunks over small bumps going slow and I had replaced the front struts, mounts bearings, etc.

On my 3rd opinion on the rack, I found a place in the Burbank CA area that was rated well with the BBB that replaced my rack with a rebuilt one for 350 installed. They just do rack & pinion and steering pumps.

I went back into their shop and met the guy who rebuilds their racks and he showed me his process. I felt comfortable with them.

I have had the "new" rack on for a week and what a difference.

I :googled: (disclaimer)... I'm a with power steering and steering systems in general - can anyone point me to some good sites on the web.. I looked but didn't find anything that was detailed.

So, why does a torn boot indicate a shot rack? Couldn't you just replace the inner-tie rod? (no flaming please )

Did you read the responses - you've already done serious damage and you'll have to replace the rack.

The torn boot does not indicate a shot rack. The gobs of fluid coming out do. A good rack with a torn boot will not leak.

Precisely...I just replaced the boot on my driver's side...easy task...once you remove the tie-rod end...but that leakage....= new rack...= more work...

i was reading that the 97-99 SE had a different part# for the rack and those specific racks had a better feel they wernt as sloppy or loose as the 95-96 SE and 95-99 GXE and GLE.

Hmmm...I work in Burbank. What street are they at? And the name of the place?

Like others said, a torn boot by itself is not much of a problem. If fluid is leaking into the boot and dripping down, that's a problem. On top of the rack is a hose with a clamp that will frequently leak. I would rule this out as a source for the leak before rebuilding or replacing the rack.
