Transmission Swap
Transmission Swap
My auto tranny is going to get replaced when I get my tax return, had it looked at Im missing 2nd and 4th gear.
But I can get a used one for about $950, but I was talking to my wife and she said "if you wanna put a manual in it you can, you just have to teach me to drive it", so I got to thinking how much would it take to swap. I know some of you have done this so i was wondering how much $$$ does it take and what options I have (as far as trannys go, a 5 speed would be awsome but what about a 6 speed)

you can find all the parts you need for about 1000 if you just get all used oem parts for the conversion. it can add up though if you want an aftermarket clutch, sts, stuff like that.
Another potential 5-speed swapper!
Do it right and you DEFINITELY won't regret it (can ya tell I like mine?
).
First things first:
1. Do it right from the get-go. Some 5-speeds had bearings that went bad after 100k-130k miles, so you'll want to avoid that. It'll cost you extra but it'll be worth it.
Your first option is a rebuilt transmission, which you should be able to get for around $1k if it's fresh; less if it's slightly used. Your second option is the transmission out of a '96-'99 Infiniti I30, which will be higher mileage for the price but has a limited-slip differential and didn't have the bearing problems nearly as much. Either way, you'll need to get the corresponding axles: Maxima axles for a Maxima transmission, I30 axles for an I30 transmission.
2. Get the clutch, throwout bearing, and pressure plate out of an '00-'01 Maxima (PM DAVEB for a good price). They won't be any more expensive than the '95-'99 parts, and they'll be a ton better.
3. If you can, get the clutch master and slave cylinders new.
4. Keep the .org posted every step of the way!
Labor shouldn't cost you more than around $1500.

I have a extra one, (but is not mine anymore) let me explain.
I have a manual trans in my car and one being rebuild the kid who is doing the rebuild will install the rebuild on mine and will keep the old one (he will rebuild that one and sell it here probably... (maybe ebay) this will happen probably in the next 30 days.
I just wanted to put this out so people get some interest...

I still wonder what the real issue is. Just because you took it to a tranny shop that wants $2200 to replace it doesn't mean they really diagnosed it. You might want to have someone that knows these trans look at it. I've seen very few that couldn't be fixed in the car.
