marvel mystery oil caused engine to smoke

Hey guys,

So since my car burns a lot of oil (130k miles), I decided to take a mechanic's suggestion and added about 1/2 quart of Marvel Mystery Oil to my car. I did not overfill it or anything. I did this about 3 days ago.

So when I was driving home tonight I revved the engine to like 5k while accelerating, and all of a sudden I heard a pretty loud noise, so I immediately let off the gas. Then when I slowed down I noticed the car sounds a little weird, and there was also a horrible smelling smoke coming out the engine bay.

After a while the smoke went away but now the car sounds really strange while driving, almost like an electric motor and there's also a slight metallic rattling noise. It also smells pretty bad. It seems just as powerful as before and doesn't shut off or anything.

Any ideas what happened and did I mess up my engine? Or is this normal for Mystery oil? Thanks.

CLIFFS: Added Mystery Oil, car sounds weird, and smells like crap now.

Moral of the story: Don't use snake oils.

And no, loud noises and smoke are not normal, under any "normal" circumstances.

Uh-oh... Metallic rattling noise in the engine is never good, nevermind when coupled with smoke and what not. My suggestion is to not drive the car and have it towed to a mechanic, preferably not the one who told you mystery oil was going to help you....

The oil additive had nothing do to with it. I use the Mystery stuff all the time, both in my oil and in my fuel system. My best gas mileage was obtained using that stuff in a tank of gas. It's a great top end and fuel injector lube.

It sounds like you have an internal engine problem. It was burning a lot of oil to begin with, the loud bang wasn't a good sign. Time to shop around for a new or used engine.

Marvel Mystery Oil is not a "snake oil"
it has been around for a loooong time, and not a bad product. It does what it says it does.

I took it to a mechanic today, he said it's 90% likely that it's the A/C compressor, he let me listen with a st3thoscope, and its definetely making the noise that I hear.

He said the smell and smoke I had was from the clutch on the A/C compressor going out. He said he's gonna find out for sure on Monday.

Thanks for all your responses, I guess Mystery Oil is OK after all
